Austin Rivers to Clippers: Latest Trade Details, Reaction, Comments
The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics, acquiring third-year guard Austin Rivers and pairing him with his dad, Doc Rivers, the head coach and president of basketball operations for the Clippers.
ESPN's Marc Stein broke the news of the deal, via SportsCenter:
Stein earlier provided more details on the trade:
The Celtics would later confirm the trade. He was made available to play against the Clippers on Jan. 16, (via Dan Woike of the Orange County Register):
Dad swinging a deal for his kid obviously makes for a unique dynamic, but the elder Rivers is confident the relationship can work.
"I think a year ago I probably wouldn't," Rivers said of being his son's coach, via the Los Angeles Times' Ben Bolch. "But I think I would for sure. I think this team could handle that. He's a downhill guard, which is something we need, so I certainly would."
As Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported, Doc had support from others in the L.A. front office:
It will be interesting to see if Rivers, whose contract is set to expire after the season, can shore up the Clippers' backup point-guard spot. Zach Lowe of Grantland sounded confused by the move from the Clippers' perspective:
The former No. 10 overall pick has been inefficient thus far in his career, shooting under 40 percent through two-plus seasons. However, he has shown a propensity for getting to the hoop, and his assist-to-turnover ratio has hovered right around a very solid 3.0 for much of the 2014-15 campaign.
If he can take care of the ball and provide a decent scoring punch to the second unit, the Clippers will be more than satisfied with this trade.
As for Austin Rivers himself, this can only be seen as a good thing. Chemistry with the coach clearly won't be a problem, while learning from Chris Paul, arguably the best guard in the league, can only be beneficial for the 22-year-old's development.
