5 Impending Free Agents Who Would Be Perfect Fits for 49ers
The "mutual separation" between Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers will likely go down as one of the lowest moments in 49ers franchise history. Fortunately this injury-riddled roster was able to gut out a win in the season finale, but the sting of his departure still lingers.
While difficult, eventually the 49ers players will have to move on. I can assure you the front office has moved on, as it has the almost herculean task of trying to replace the enigmatic Harbaugh.
As always, the 49ers will focus on improving the roster via the NFL draft. This is what smart teams do; however, I think its time the 49ers front office hits some home runs with free agency.
The 49ers have largely been quiet in free agency over the last few years, and while the team won't have much wiggle room with cap space, there are gems to be found.
Let's take a look at five free agents San Francisco should seriously consider come free agency.
5. Shaun Hill—QB

The 49ers desperately need a veteran backup at quarterback. Now, I wouldn't call the Colt McCoy and Blaine Gabbert experiments disastrous, but can we seriously say either player made significant contributions in his tenure?
When you bring in a backup quarterback, he should be able to challenge for the starting position or at the very least bring some veteran leadership in the film room. With Gabbert and McCoy, they failed in both aspects.
With the addition of Shaun Hill, a former 49ers fan favorite, Colin Kaepernick should finally have a veteran quarterback to lean on during the tough times. Not to mention, Hill could serve as a serviceable starter in the event of a Kaepernick injury.
4. Denarius Moore—WR

This selection might surprise a few folks, but Denarius Moore would be an excellent pickup by Trent Baalke and Co.
Moore brings a speed dynamic at the receiver position that the 49ers sorely lack. He can work in the slot and outside the hash, and he should spread the field for possession receivers like Anquan Boldin and Stevie Johnson.
Now, Moore is a bit of an injury risk. Moore also is coming off a season where he only caught 12 balls for 115 receiving yards. In his first three seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Moore had at least 30 catches and 600 receiving yards.
His lack of production in concerning, but we have to remember that the Raiders had a rookie quarterback at the helm. On a positive side, his lack of production should put him in the 49ers' price range.
3. Byron Maxwell—CB

I'm sure 49ers fans would love to see a former Seattle Seahawks player donning the red and gold. It's not like the 49ers and Seahawks have a heated rivalry or anything.
All joking aside, Byron Maxwell would be a nice fit in this 49ers secondary—just like many 49ers players would make a seamless transition in the Northwest.
Both teams hate each other, but they're alike in so many ways.
Maxwell would be higher on this list, but the 49ers might have some trouble meeting his contractual demands. There are plenty of teams who would pay handsomely for the services of a long and rangy corner like Maxwell.
Of course, the 49ers will try to keep their own free agents in Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver before vying for Maxwell's services. However, if that fails, bringing in Maxwell should improve the 49ers secondary while also weakening a divisional rival.
2. Brandon Flowers—CB
4 of 5
The 49ers showed interest in Brandon Flowers last year when the Kansas City Chiefs released the veteran; however, Flowers chose to stay within the AFC West division and sign with the San Diego Chargers.
In his second stint with free agency, Flowers could finally make the move to the Bay Area.
Despite the talk of Flowers being over the hill, the veteran cornerback played well in his first season with the Chargers. Flowers provided versatility and veteran leadership to a Chargers secondary sorely in need of it.
As stated before, the 49ers could be without two key players in the secondary with Cox and Culliver set to hit free agency this year. They should have a healthy Tramaine Brock back in the fold, which will help, but they need another veteran or two in the back end.
Unlike Maxwell, Flowers will more than likely come at a cheaper price as well. I can definitely see Flowers having a career renaissance, much like Antoine Bethea last year.
1. Torrey Smith—WR
5 of 5
Torrey Smith might be too rich for the 49ers' blood. But Baalke should swing for the fences if the former Maryland Terrapin reaches free agency, even though I don't see the cap-strapped Baltimore Ravens franchise tagging Smith if both sides can't come away with a deal.
Now, if Smith was a free agent last year or even the year before, we could be talking about a deal north of $50 million. However, after the fiasco with Mike Wallace in Miami, I think teams will second-guess handing out big money to receivers.
The 49ers have two free agents in Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd who I expect will find new homes in the coming months. That leaves the 49ers with Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson, Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton as their core receiving group.
Securing Smith's services would give the 49ers a legitimate deep threat who can take the top off a defense. Smith would be a perfect complement to both Boldin and Johnson, who like to work the middle of the field.
Outside of a team throwing big money at Smith, the 49ers could be an ideal landing spot.
