Was Saints' Jimmy Graham Robbed of TD vs. Falcons?

Kristopher KnoxDec 21, 2014

Thanks to the current state of the NFC South, both the 6-8 New Orleans Saints and the 5-9 Atlanta Falcons are still in the running for a division title.

This is why the game on Sunday between the two teams held so much importance, despite the records of the participants.

This is also why all parties involved (including the fans and the 5-8-1 Carolina Panthers) had to hope for a cleanly officiated game that left no doubt as to the rightful outcome. So when a questionable call occurred to kick off the fourth quarter, everyone took notice.

On the first play of the final period and with the Saints trailing 20-7, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees found tight end Jimmy Graham near the goal line for a potential score. A touchdown would have pulled the Saints to within a score, but officials ruled that Graham fumbled just before reaching the end zone.

Did he, though?

The fumble was reviewed (all turnovers are), and the Falcons took over with an opportunity to take time off the clock.

It isn't easy to tell from the replay if the ball crossed the goal line prior to the fumble or if Graham was stopped short, but an argument can be made that the right call should have been a Saints touchdown.

The officials obviously felt otherwise.
