2009 PGA Championship Odds, Picks & Rankings

Handicappers PicksAug 4, 2009

In a few weeks the best golfers in the world will tee-off in the 2009 PGA Championship. The PGA is the fourth and final major tournament of the year. Not only will Angel Cabrera, the winner of the 2009 Masters, Lucas Glover, the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open and Stewart Cink, the winner of the 2009 British Open be there, but so will Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Kenny Perry and Phil Mickelson. Tiger, as always, is the favorite in the BetUS online sportsbook, but Tiger was the favorite for the first three majors of 2009 and he failed to win any of them. Let’s take a look at the PGA Rankings with odds.

1. Tiger Woods +200 – - Woods finished second to Richard Beem by a single stroke in 2002 when the Hazeltine Golf Course held that year’s PGA Championship. Tiger hasn’t been that great in majors this year, by his standards, but he did finish in the top ten in both the Masters and the U.S. Open before struggling on the links course in the British Open. Tiger should bounce back on a course he knows well and make no mistake…he wants this badly.

2. Jim Furyk +2500 – - Furyk finished in 9th place in 2002 and has been, as always, ultra-consistent in 2009. He hasn’t won a tournament this year but has won a major before and usually wins at least one tournament every year. Maybe, the PGA will be that tournament. Furyk knows the course well could be tough should he be in the final grouping on Sunday.

3. Kenny Perry +2800 – - Perry won the Traveler’s Championship in June, but failed to really menace in the John Deere Classic or the British Open. Kenny’s going through a tough time right now, but he’s too good of a golfer, and Hazeltine is the type of course that he should relish, for me to keep him out of the top 5. This guy is a serious competitor and it’s about time he wins a major. Maybe, the PGA is that major.

4. Stewart Cink +6500 – - The odds on the British Open winner surprise me as Cink was terrific in 2002 in this tournament and on this course when finishing tied for 9th. Cink is obviously at the top of his game after winning the British Open and since he has history on his side on this course, he has to make the rankings.

5. Paul Casey +2800 – - Like so many other golfers, Casey’s British Open debacle was just that, a debacle. He finished in 47th place after shooting a 68 in the first round. Casey has played in four straight tournaments where he hasn’t finished in the top 45. In two of those tournaments, he missed the cut. The thing is he might be ready to bounce back and into the top 10 because Hazeltine should play to his strengths.

6. Phil Mickelson +1200 – - Phil will return in two weeks in the WGC-Bridgstone. Mickelson likes to warm up for a major by playing a week before. If the U.S. Open was any indication, Mickelson will be at the top of his game, but at the golf odds, he might not be such a great wager. Let’s see how he does in the WGC first before moving him up in the rankings.

7. Padraig Harrington +2500 – - Last year’s PGA winner is having a terrible 2009 but he could be rounding back into form as his 65th place finish at the British Open wasn’t too shabby. Of course, that’s because he actually made the cut in the British Open after failing to make the cut in three straight PGA events. Harrington still must be considered because like Casey, his form could turn around quickly.

8. Sergio Garcia +2500 – - Sergio finished tied for 10th in the 2002 PGA Championship. He could definitely be a golfer to consider for a wager because he finished 10th in the U.S. Open and actually had two solid rounds in the British before crumbling on Saturday and Sunday. Garcia was the runner-up in last year’s PGA Championship.

9. Zach Johnson +5000 – - Johnson has two victories in 2009 and was the runner-up in the John Deere Classic earlier in July. His British Open was terrible, but not as bad as some others on this list and he’s maintained his top 5 ranking in the FedEx Cup Standings. He’s an interesting long shot.

10. Vijay Singh +3500 – - It was around this time last year when Vijay got his game in order and started to play very well. He won the WGC-Bridgestone in 2008, the tournament before the PGA Championship, and finished in 8th place at Hazeltine in 2002.
