Greatest Single Alabama Football Performance?
While we are waiting on the upcoming '09 season to begin, I thought it would be a good time to ask the question, what is the greatest single perfomance by an Alabama Team?
Now, I am a little biased on this article because I graduated from Alabama in May '93. My choice is the '93 Sugar Bowl thumping of Miami to win the National Championship.
Here are a few of the stat's from that game;
- Alabama went to the National Championship following a 28–21 victory over the Gators in the inaugural SEC Championship Game.
- Derrick Lassic rushed for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ended up on the cover of SI.
- Alabama gained 67 more rushing yards than any team had gained against Miami all year.
- Miami was held to 48 rushing yards (42 yards came during Miami's final drive).
- Teague's 31 yard interception return for a touchdown extended Bama's lead to 21.
- All American's Eric Curry and John Copeland. Enough said.
- Torretta's first two passes of the second half were intercepted.
- When all was said and done, Alabama rushed for 267 yards and dominated the clock for more than 36 minutes.
- Bama's defense held the Hurricanes to just 13 points.
- Final? 34-13 rout of the No. 1 'Canes.
And of course, what is known as one of the greatest plays ever, "The Strip". Alabama defensive back George Teague ran down the fastest man in college football, Miami receiver Lamar Thomas and took the ball away from him at the Bama five yard line. (The play was negated by an Alabama offside penalty, but the strip was still successful in preventing a Miami touchdown)
