Hoyer, Pettine Comment on Starting Job

Mary Kay Cabot of The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer passed along comments from Brian Hoyer on the starting job with the Browns:

"

We're 7-5. This just doesn't happen by luck. It was hard-earned, and we've worked to get where we're at. We're still in it. With those other teams losing yesterday, we have four more games. Two of them are division games.

You don't get to 7-5 in the NFL just lucking into it. It's been a lot of hard work, and I think I've proven that I've gotten us to this point. I feel like I can carry us through the next four games. There's no doubt in my mind that I'll be ready to go.

"

Browns head coach Mike Pettine discussed the quarterback play and the decision to evaluate the position on Monday, via Jim Corbett of USA Today and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN:

Pettine also touched on when he'll make a decision and how permanent it will be, via Fowler and Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan:

However, Pettine did rule out playing both quarterbacks at the same time, via Zac Jackson of Fox Sports Ohio:

Manziel Replaces Hoyer

John Clayton of ESPN documented the move:

A stout Bills defensive front stymied the Browns running game and got to Hoyer often, limiting Cleveland to just three points under his guidance. After Hoyer threw his second interception of the game, Browns head coach Mike Pettine decided to make the quarterback change.

Manziel saw his first action early in the fourth quarter, and he led an 80-yard touchdown drive in just over three minutes. The drive was capped by a Manziel 10-yard scramble to make the score 20-10.

The rookie finished 5-of-8 passing for 63 yards. He added 13 yards and a score on two carries.

After the defeat, Pettine revealed his plans for naming a starter under center, via ESPN's Adam Caplan:

NFL Network's Albert Breer added more details:

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler added another statement from Pettine discussing his quarterback situation:

"

The door is definitely open for a change at the quarterback position. It's not like we're just going to go back to Brian (Hoyer). This has been a cumulative thing where discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We'll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon. …

…It's a bottom-line business. (Manziel's) task was to move us down the field -- he did and did a good job.

"

Hoyer also commented on his move to the bench during the loss, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Manziel commented on the decision as well via Cabot:

"

It's obviously up to coach (Mike) Pettine and some higher up people than me in this organization. If that is the case and my name is called, then I definitely will be ready...Coach Pettine has done nothing but put us in the right situation throughout the entire year. I don't see that changing any time moving forward. I think he's going to put this football team in the best position to win and whoever does that, that's his choice. He's been in this game a lot longer than I have, obviously.
