MLB Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

Walker DanielsJul 31, 2009

The MLB trade deadline has come and gone and, while it didn't exactly do its NHL impression, it was one of the more eventful baseball deadline days in recent memory. Who won? Who lost? Who broke even?

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

BOSTON - I'm betting you all agree with this one. Let's see -- they nabbed Victor Martinez, who arguably never hit in a lineup this good in Cleveland. He's a huge offensive upgrade over Jason Varitek. Speaking of upgrade, Casey Kotchman is younger, and better defensively than Adam LaRoche, whom the BoSox sent to Atlanta in a one-for-one. And they did all this without trading Clay Buchholz. They did WHAT?!

SAN DIEGO - Got a better package from the White Sox for Peavy than they would've a few months ago. And let's not forget that the Pale Hose acquired damaged goods for top prospects.

DETROIT - I like the Jarrod Washburn deal. His salary isn't astronomical and he's an innings eater who can pitch deep into games. Apparently Tigers' management realized that their entire staff is coming back to Earth, so Washburn is good insurance.

BREAKING EVEN...

CLEVELAND - The Tribe did well getting Jason Donald in the Cliff Lee deal, but they should've held the Red Sox hostage for Clay Buchholz in the Martinez trade.

TORONTO - Trading Halladay would've been nice, but the list of suitors will only grow this winter. And shipping Rolen for Edwin Encarnacion, eight years his junior, was astute, even if Encarnacion's defense sucks. God bless the DH!

PHILADELPHIA - Why not acquire Lee? They're a championship team in its prime ready to win now. May as well try to start a dynasty.

AND THE LOSERS ARE...

BOTH LOS ANGELES TEAMS - Both squads have rotation depth issues and neither addressed its needs. The Dodgers in particular boned this one since Chad Billingsley is falling off the face of the Earth.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX - They gutted their farm system for an injured pitcher whose best seasons could very well be behind him. Sure, they're in the hunt in the AL Central (who isn't?), but this team is one game over .500. Can they actually make noise in the playoffs? Would you ever wager on this team at a sportsbook?

There you have it, folks. My two cents on deadline day. Until next year...
