Adrian Gonzalez To Boston, Halladay To Texas? The Trade Dealine Is Upon Us

Daniel MalkinJul 31, 2009

There are two major trades that are currently in the works as the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaches. These two trades involve Roy Halladay to the Texas Rangers, and Adrian Gonzalez and the Boston Red Sox.

In order for the Rangers to land Halladay, they will have to part ways with pitching prospect Derek Holland. Team President Nolan Ryan said that he will not trade Holland in order to acquire Halladay. As the deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see what occurs between the Rangers and the Blue Jays.

On the other hand, the Red Sox are in heavy pursuit of San Diego Padres first basemen Adrian Gonzalez. In order to acquire the slugger, the Sox will have to send Clay Buchholz and a few other prospects to San Diego. There is also speculation that Boston may be able to bring closer Heath Bell to Fenway as well. However, San Diego is demanding top prospect Daniel Bard in return.

Both of these trades are extremely interesting. Both the Red Sox and Rangers are currently battling one another for the Wild Card spot.

If the Rangers can get Halladay, it will prove to the baseball world that they are serious about making a run at the playoffs. It will also give them a shot at catching the Angels in the West Division, and make the chase with the Sox that much more exciting.

For the Red Sox, I still think Halladay is the guy they should be going for; however, I love what Gonzalez can bring to the table. I don't believe they will give up Bard as part of the deal, so don't count on Bell coming to Boston.

The trade deadline is upon us and as always it is a very exciting time to be a baseball fan.
