Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt: Feud Will Steal the Show at Survivor Series

Sharon GlencrossNov 22, 2014

While the Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt program may have been a missed opportunity so far, expect those two to steal the show on Sunday night when they finally do square off.

Considering the mediocre booking treatment both men have been subjected to over the past few months, it would be easy for fans to overlook their talent and forget how great they truly are.

Both guys are tremendous wrestlers with a superb grasp of ‘80s in-ring psychology—legendary star Jake “The Snake” Roberts appears to have been a significant influence on them.

Wyatt’s gripping battle against John Cena at the Payback event in June was easily one of the best WWE matches of the year and maybe one of the last great matches the aging and injury-prone Cena will ever have.

Wyatt’s bouts with Chris Jericho throughout the summer were also very solid.

His character may be stale and have all sorts of problems, but it’s difficult to argue with his sterling in-ring output.

Ambrose, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the very best wrestlers on the roster over the past two years. His work in The Shield was outstanding. The trio frequently churned out amazing matches on television and pay-per-view.

He’s also shined as a singles performer. His match with longtime nemesis Seth Rollins at last month’s Hell in a Cell show was shaping up to be a classic until its nonsensical ending. His phenomenal No Holds Barred match with Cena on the October 13 Raw also served to showcase his skills.

Provided the bookers give them enough time—and keep the match free of Wyatt’s fake supernatural antics—there’s no reason these guys can’t steal the show in St. Louis.

Another reason the bout is likely to be the best on the card is that, frankly, the other matches don’t actually look that promising.

The 10-man main event will be important from a storyline perspective, but it will probably feature too much outside interference and too many shenanigans to be truly great. The involvement of Ryback, Rusev and Kane—all patchy and inconsistent performers at best—also raises the question of just how good the quality of the bout will be.

The rest of the card (two women’s matches, a Fandango bout and a Fatal 4-Way tag match) looks a bit flat as well. The event looks decent enough, but it’s easy to see why it doesn’t feel like must-see programming. It’s essentially just another interchangeable WWE pay-per-view.

Honestly, not only will Wyatt and Ambrose probably deliver the best match, but they might end up saving an otherwise middling card. All they need is enough time and breathing space from the writers to be able to do their thing.

It’s possible Sunday’s match will mark the end of the Wyatt vs. Ambrose rivalry—it’s surely time for both men to move on from this program and get involved in the main event scene again—but if so, expect it to go out with a bang.
