When Will Managers Learn That Brian McCann Can Beat Them Too?

Cameron BrittJul 30, 2009

The disrespect for Brian McCann is laughable.

I don't know how many times this has happened, but on July 30 against the Marlins, B-Mac made Freddi Gonzalez pay for pitching around Chipper Jones in the tenth inning via a three-run shot to right field.

Look, I get that Chipper was 6-for-10 off of Luis Ayala, but it's not like Diory Hernandez or Greg Norton is batting behind him.

It's Brian McCann.

The same Brian McCann who, entering the game, was batting .298 (nine points higher than Jones) with a .505 slugging percentage (99 points higher than Jones) and had driven in the same number of runs as Chipper.

Add to that his two doubles leading up to his extra-inning heroics, and you've gotta be questioning Gonzalez's logic.

Provided, Chipper is still a dangerous hitter.

But is he the same player that Brian McCann is?

Put simply, no.

I don't necessarily think this will have broad effect on opposing team's game plans, but as McCann continues to mature into one of the best hitting catchers in the game today, there stands a good chance that, in the near future, Chipper is going to be the one challenged to deliver in spots B-Mac has proved deadly in.

On another note; Bennett is gone.

That's right, Bobby Cox's golden boy will no longer have the opportunity to cost the Braves leads late in games.

Bye-bye Jeff.

Good luck in your future door-fighting career.
