NEWS: Ramirez and Ortiz Said To Be On 2003 List of PED Users

Todd CivinJul 30, 2009

According to NY Times reporter, Michael S. Schmidt, both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were among the 104 Major League players to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, according to lawyers with knowledge of the results.

Ortiz, who spoke out vehemently against PED's over the course of the past season, would join the names of Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Jason Grimsley and David Sequi, as those who have been confirmed to be amongst the list of 104.

Ramirez, who currently plays for the Los Anglese Dodgers, was Ortiz teammate for the 2003 Red Sox and formed the powerful three-four combination during the Red Sox World Series Championship in 2004.

According to the Times Report, "The information about Ramirez and Ortiz emerged through interviews with multiple lawyers and others connected to the pending litigation. The lawyers spoke anonymously because the testing information is under seal by a court order. The lawyers did not identify which drugs were detected."

When Ortiz was asked about the 2003 drug test on Thursday in Boston Ortiz had little to say. “I’m not talking about that anymore,” he said. “I have no comment.”

Ramirez returned recently from a 50-game suspension when he tested positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs. To date, Ramirez suspension has been the highest profile suspension of any MLB player associated with PED's.

Red Sox announcer and recent Hall of Fame inducty, Jim Rice, commented, "If they are going to throw David's name out there, why not leak everyone's name out."
