One Non-Major Tournament That the Top PGA Tour Stars Would Love to Win in 2015

Mike DudurichNov 20, 2014

Most players on the PGA Tour would cherish a victory wherever and whenever it might happen.

But for the elite players, they have compiled such an impressive list of performances that they're to the point of targeting certain tournaments as ones they really want to win.

At least, that's the way it's going to play out in this list.

The following is a list of tournaments I think select players might like to win. Of course, some of these events aren't on the players' normal schedules, but it makes for a fun list.

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson has yet to put on one of the Memorial Tournament's gray blazers.

It seems impossible for Phil Mickelson to have won 42 times on the PGA Tour and not have the Memorial Tournament on that list of victories.

The man is a five-time major champion, and he has won at the Augusta National Golf Club, Baltusrol Golf Club and Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland.

Muirfield Village Golf Club, the site of Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament, is one of the best in the land, providing a great test every year.

And more important than all of that, will Mickelson's career be complete without walking off the 18th green on Sunday afternoon getting the handshake and hug from Nicklaus?

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods would love playing in South Carolina's low country.

Tiger Woods dominated golf in the early years of his reign with an awesome display of power.

He developed a superb short game and discovered he could win that way as well, which makes it a shame that Woods hasn't won the RBC Heritage Classic, held annually on the Harbour Town Golf Links.

The place is one of Pete Dye's earliest designs and is a classic shot-maker's haven. Finesse and imagination are the most important aspects of a player's game, while length is not a big deal.

The biggest thing working against Woods playing at Hilton Head is the fact that the RBC is played the week after the Masters, and Woods rarely plays the week after a major.

He'd very much enjoy the experience by the Calibogue Sound, and a win there would further enhance his resume.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has won four majors, a World Golf Championship and a FedEx Cup event, and he is the No. 1 player in the world for good reason.

If he's able to nail down the Rory-Slam with a win at Augusta National in April, the tournament he'd love to get next would be the Players Championship.

It's not the fifth major, as some might want to make it, but it's a very big event with a $10 million purse. The Players and the PGA Championship share the honor of having the largest purse of the year.

McIlroy's immense length won't give him a great advantage, but his ball striking should definitely give him an edge.

He'd love to scratch that one off his to-do list.

Rickie Fowler is probably the most talented player on the PGA Tour with just one win.

Rickie Fowler is a very popular player on the PGA Tour.

He's young, attractive, dresses with a flair and can really play.

Just imagine how popular he'll be when he gets his second and third (and beyond) wins.

One of the places where he's become very popular is the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the TPC of Scottsdale.

He came close to getting his first win there, settling for a second-place finish.

Fowler would love to get his name on the trophy in the desert—winning a tournament that would embrace a young, very talented champion like the former Oklahoma State University Cowboy.

Bubba Watson

Bubba Watson has won a pair of Masters titles and the World Golf Championships-HSBC Championship.

The long-driving, ball-moving left-hander from Bagdad, Florida, has not won in his home state and would surely love to break that streak with a win in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship.

Bubba and the newly renovated 7,510-yard Blue Monster at Doral would seem to be a match made in heaven. The length won't be an issue for Watson, who was the leader in driving distance in 2014 with an average of 314.3 yards on the measured holes.

His ball striking is good enough to handle the large number of water hazards scattered around the course, especially when he has short irons in his hands for approach shots.

A win at Doral would be a jewel in Watson's crown.

Adam Scott

Adam Scott is the leader of a very talented group of Austrailans.

Adam Scott had a brief reign as the No. 1 player in the world before being steamrolled by the Rory McIlroy express in midsummer. Scott has a Masters title, a Tour Championship and a World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational among his 11 PGA Tour wins.

There isn't a player on the PGA Tour who wouldn't want to win a tournament that's either named after or hosted by one of golf's legendary figures.

Scott would certainly be in that group and he, no doubt, would love to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

We've seen Palmer shaking hands and joking with Woods many times after his victories in that event, and a player with Scott's resume should add that one to his pedigree as well.
