Boston Currently Aiming In On Gonzalez

Tony SantorsaJul 27, 2009

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, "The Red Sox's top target at the moment appears to be Padres star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez."

Adrian Gonzalez is currently batting .246 and is second in the league with 26 home runs. Gonzalez is a huge power threat and an RBI machine.

If Boston were to trade for Gonzalez, it would be likely they would have to part ways with Clay Buchholz. In order to get the deal done, it would take Buchholz and a few other prospects to get the deal done.

Gonzalez would be a great fit in Boston, but there's one problem. What do they do with Mike Lowell and Adam LaRoche?

I think it's obvious that if the Gonzalez deal goes through that LaRoche will be moved in that deal or in a separate deal for either a prospect or even in a package deal for Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, but that's unlikely.

Gonzalez, Youkilis, and Lowell would all have to share playing time, but Lowell would be on the short end of it. Lowell could play a few games a week or even share the designated hitter spot with David Ortiz, but I'm not too sure about that.

Just a few days ago the Victor Martinez trade rumors were really picking up, but as of late, they have been cooling done because Boston doesn't feel that Martinez isn't worth giving up Buchholz.

Boston's top priority before the deadline is to add another bat to this line-up. They are missing some pop and power, and Gonzalez and Martinez would be a perfect fit, but at the right price.

Boston's general manager Theo Epstein has made it clear he really doesn't want to trade Buchholz, but at the end of the week, I think that Boston will part ways with the young gun in order to acquire Adrian Gonzalez or Victor Martinez.
