Manchester City vs. Newcastle: Winners and Losers from Capital One Cup Game
Newcastle United are through to the quarter-final stage of the Capital One Cup after picking up their first win at Manchester City in 14 years.
Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko each found the back of the net in the 2-0 victory for the guests, who, despite leading for much of the encounter, spent the balance of play defending their own goal.
But they did it with competence and organisation, and over the 90 minutes a frustrated, disjointed City side lacked the incision for a breakthrough.
There were a handful of standout performances at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday along with several disappointing displays, and the following slideshow will highlight just a few of them.
Here are the individual winners and losers from Newcastle's unlikely victory.
Winner: Rob Elliot, Who Stood Tall Between the Sticks for Newcastle
1 of 6
Rob Elliot is Tim Krul's deputy at Newcastle, but on Wednesday the No. 2 goalkeeper stood tall between the sticks.
Manchester City might have equalised in the 20th minute had the 28-year-old not made a superb double-save on Stevan Jovetic following Samir Nasri's cross from the right.
In the 42nd minute Elliot did well to anticipate Yaya Toure's attempt from distance, and with 16 minutes remaining he denied Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick attempt.
Loser: Eliaquim Mangala, Whose Struggles Continued for Manchester City
2 of 6
Eliaquim Mangala completed a £31.8 million transfer from Porto to Manchester City in August, but he has yet to justify his price tag for the Premier League champions.
A liability in City's Champions League draw at CSKA Moscow last week, he was also part of the side that lost 2-1 at West Ham United on Saturday. Against Newcastle, his struggles continued.
Only six minutes had ticked off the clock when he was beaten by Aarons for Newcastle's opener, and as Goal's Paul Macdonald pointed out on his Twitter account, the 23-year-old was one of City's poorer performers as they exited the Capital One Cup.
Winner: Ryan Taylor, Who Was a Colossus for the Magpies
3 of 6
Ryan Taylor put previous injury troubles behind him on Wednesday as he starred in Newcastle's away victory.
The versatile 30-year-old picked up an assist on Aarons' opener, but it was his work on the defensive side of the ball that will have especially impressed manager Alan Pardew.
With five minutes remaining, he tracked back to make a vital block on Edin Dzeko, something The Telegraph's Henry Winter praised on his Twitter account as the second half wound down at Etihad Stadium.
Speaking after the game to broadcaster Sky Sports, Taylor said: "It was a fairy tale, a dream. It is two years of hard graft for myself. Just to get back playing football is a dream."
Loser: Stuart Attwell, Who Denied Newcastle a Clear Penalty
4 of 6
Newcastle were denied a clear penalty midway through the second half when Kolarov tripped Gabriel Obertan inside the Manchester City area.
Referee Stuart Attwell should have awarded it, but instead of pointing to the spot he allowed play to continue.
As the The Northern Echo's Scott Wilson pointed out on Twitter, it was a poor decision and could have ended up being costly for the Magpies.
Winner: Alan Pardew, Whose Team Did Him Proud
5 of 6
On paper, Pardew's starting lineup looked to be far inferior to that deployed by Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, but at the final whistle it was the Newcastle manager who was celebrating.
Pardew's faith in No. 2 goalkeeper Elliot was rewarded with an exceptional showing, and he was justified in his midfield selections by the standout performances put forward by Mehdi Abeid and Taylor.
While many of the high-profile City players couldn't be bothered on Wednesday, Pardew's men played with purpose from the opening whistle and came away with the win.
Newcastle will want to build on this win, but they face no easy task as they have been paired with Tottenham in the quarter-finals.
The Magpies beat Spurs in the Premier League last weekend, so they will certainly head to White Hart Lane high on confidence.
Loser: Fernandinho, Who Was Abysmal in the City Midfield
6 of 6
Fernandinho played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday. He'll likely not see an entire match in a Manchester City shirt for quite some time.
In the sixth minute, the Brazil international was barged off the ball by Taylor, who put Aarons through to open the scoring.
Then, in the 75th minute, he was beaten by Newcastle substitute Sissoko, who powered past him before clipping the ball into the back of the net.
According to WhoScored.com, the 29-year-old also completed just 81 percent of his passes in what was a forgettable match for him and his team-mates.
