Manchester City vs. Newcastle: Capital One Cup Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info

Gianni VerschuerenOct 28, 2014

Defending champions Manchester City will host Newcastle United during Wednesday's Capital One Cup action, as Alan Pardew and his squad attempt to continue their resurgence.

After a dreadful start to the season, the Magpies have suddenly won two consecutive matches and find themselves 14th in the Premier League standings, just seven points behind City.

The hosts lost a shocker to West Ham United on Saturday and need to gain some momentum with rivals Manchester City visiting the Etihad during the weekend, so expect to see two teams leaving everything on the pitch on Wednesday.

Two weeks ago, it seemed like fans and pundits were collectively waiting for the announcement Pardew had been sacked. The 53-year-old's start to the season had been such a disaster, it just wasn't possible he would keep his job through all of it.

Somehow, the Magpies have since responded with two one-goal wins, including a comeback against Tottenham. Even ESPN FC saw the humour of the situation:

Pardew's job still isn't safe, but it's a little safer than it was before the international break. An upset win on Wednesday could help his case even more.

To his credit, the win over Leicester came as a result of a fine bit of coaching. The manager revealed he was harsh on his players at half-time, as reported by the Newcastle Chronicle's Neil Cameron:

"

There were a few strong words. I said to them afterwards that it’s not nice as a manager to sometimes come in and bark out orders, but sometimes it’s necessary just to shake people up – we needed shaking up.

[...]We reminded them of the fundamentals of a Premier League game and we got a much more stronger attitude.

[...]I was surprised we scored after eight seconds, but pleased they took on what we said. An easy thing in football is talking; you need to show it,

In the last three or four games we have shown tremendous character. We have a young side and we perhaps need a bit more quality in and around the team.

"

Hosting the Magpies will be Manchester City, who trail Premier League leaders Chelsea by six points after falling to West Ham United last weekend. Once again, Manuel Pellegrini's troops looked slow and disinterested, a recurring theme during the 2014-15 season.

The Citizens are slumping. Giving away a lead late against CSKA Moscow has put the Premier League champions in a difficult situation to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, and the loss against the Hammers was the last thing they needed.

Momentum has all but evaporated at the Etihad, and with a big match against hated rivals United coming up, they need to regain it in a hurry. James Milner told the club's official website the team is taking it "one match at a time:"

"

We just take it one game at a time, concentrate on whatever is in front of us and try and win it. At this stage of the season it’s all about trying to get into a good position in all the competitions that we’re in so by the time March comes around, you are in the latter stages of everything or maybe even the final.

We are the Capital One Cup holders and although some say some cups are more important than others, a lot of people have never won the League Cup and would love to have the chance.

"

On talent, the outcome of this fixture shouldn't be in doubt. City are the defending champions for a reason—when everything is clicking, there are only a handful of teams in all of football capable of slowing the squad down.

The hosts will need to play with a lot more intensity on Wednesday, however. Newcastle travel to the Etihad with the world expecting them to lose, and playing without any real pressure can be liberating.

If the Citizens fail to assert their dominance inside the first 20 minutes, Pardew's men should have no trouble believing they can pull off the upset.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle
