Manchester United produced some late drama to secure a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday, denying the Blues the chance to put some more ground between themselves and the other Premier League title contenders.

Manchester City suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of a surging West Ham United squad, while Liverpool failed to get past Hull City at home, playing out a drab 0-0 draw on Saturday.

Arsenal booked a much-needed 2-0 win over Sunderland, and Sadio Mane scored the only goal in Southampton's win over Stoke City. The full schedule for Week 9 of the Premier League season:

Queens Park Rangers recorded a simple 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Loftus Road on Monday night, the final match of Week 9. After an impressive start, both clubs served up a drab display, with the hosts fortunate to score twice and pick up three points.

Aston Villa dominated the early proceedings, with Christian Benteke doing an excellent job of dropping away from the defenders and Carlos Sanchez getting an impressive amount of touches on the ball.

There was no real threat of either side, however, until the 17th minute, when Charlie Austin opened the score for the hosts.

Bobby Zamora chested down a long ball and Austin took a shot on goal with his first touch, giving Brad Guzan no chance.

The Daily Telegraph's Henry Winters conceded the goal came as a shock, as QPR had looked poor from the start:

The setback seemed to shake the visitors, who had looked lively and creative up until that point. Villa's attack became rushed and predictable, and it wasn't aided by some poor positional play.

The Daily Telegraph's Matt Law noticed Benteke started to struggle:

The match soon dropped to a snail's pace, as the first half saw little in terms of chances created. Andreas Weimann was shaken up after a collision with Leroy Fer, rounding out the first-half action.

Winters was slightly disappointed:

Aston Villa showed more intensity in the second half, but the hosts did an excellent job of locking down the areas around the box. Benteke and Ciaran Clark had strong efforts turned away by vital blocks, as the visitors attempted to increase the tempo.

Junior Hoilett had a good chance to double QPR's advantage in the 67th minute, curling his shot just wide, but Austin didn't fail minutes later, converting a beautiful cross from Eduardo Vargas.

Joe Cole and Benteke got in each other's way trying to score for Villa, leading to this observation from Bleacher Report UK's Sam Tighe:

Tom Cleverley found some space inside the box after 80 minutes, but Robert Green produced an excellent double save to protect the clean sheet.

The hosts comfortably controlled the match for the final 10 minutes, picking up three pivotal points in the race to avoid relegation.

Sunday Recap

Chelsea nearly emerged as the big winners of Matchday 9 of the 2014-15 Premier League season, but Manchester United found a way to equalise late as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.

SportsCenter shared the result:

Both teams looked lively early on but couldn't translate the high intensity into any chances until the 23rd minute, when Thibaut Courtois produced an excellent save to deny Robin van Persie.

Branislav Ivanovic wanted a penalty in the 36th minute after a challenge from Chris Smalling, and David De Gea was on point to deny veteran striker Didier Drogba's blast just before half-time.

Marouane Fellaini nearly gave the hosts the lead early in the second half, firing his effort just wide, and the Blues made the Red Devils pay a minute later, taking the lead through Drogba.

Eden Hazard forced De Gea into an excellent save, but Drogba tucked away the resulting corner, finding a way to get the ball past Van Persie, who was defending on the line. As shared by The Sun Football, the goal changed the complexity of the match completely:

Willian nearly doubled Chelsea's advantage minutes later, but De Gea didn't let his powerful drive fool him. It took until the final 10 minutes for the hosts to produce some real danger, but Courtois did well to parry Van Persie's effort and Adnan Januzaj's follow-up missed the target.

The late push arrived but lacked bite, and it appeared the Blues would emerge victorious. Ivanovic was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time, however, and Van Persie pouned on a loose ball to score the equaliser from the resulting free kick.

Newcastle United shocked Tottenham at White Hart Lane, winning 2-1 to go two points clear of the relegation zone. Alan Pardew's hot seat became a little colder on Sunday, as the manager appears to have turned things around at St. James Park for now.

The Magpies went into the international break without winning a single match but have now won back-to-back fixtures, and on Sunday, Pardew had a big hand in the win. With his team struggling, he identified the problem and introduced Sammy Ameobi to fix it.

The forward scored the equaliser to wipe out Emmanuel Adebayor's first-half goal, and Ayoze Perez's header in the 58th minute ultimately proved to be the decider. Former England international Gary Lineker couldn't help himself:

Samuel Eto'o scored a brace and Romelu Lukaku also got his name on the scoresheet as Everton comfortably took care of Burnley, winning 3-1.

Danny Ings had cancelled out the early opener by Eto'o, but the hosts were put on the back foot again by Belgium international Lukaku, who made up for a bad pass on the equaliser by slotting home from close range.

Burnley put together a valiant performance in the second half but were clearly no match for the Toffees, who ensured the three points by adding a third goal late in the match.

Roberto Martinez praised veteran striker Eto'o, and not just for his goals, via the club's official Twitter feed:

Matchday 9 will conclude when Queens Park Rangers host Aston Villa on Monday.

Saturday Recap

Manchester City left it too late to complete a comeback at Upton Park, losing 2-1 to West Ham United. The hosts took an early lead through Morgan Amalfitano and doubled their advantage in the 75th minute, as Diafra Sakho continued his red-hot form.

As shared by Squawka Football, he became just the first Hammer to score in six consecutive Premier League matches:

City once again looked slow and sluggish in the buildup, getting out-muscled in the centre of the pitch throughout the afternoon. Sakho's goal appeared to wake the defending champions up, as David Silva immediately pulled one back with a beautiful solo effort.

The late push for an equaliser lacked any real ambition, however, as the hosts handed the Citizens their second defeat of the season. City manager Manuel Pellegrini gave full credit to West Ham:

Liverpool failed to score against Hull City at Anfield, despite an excellent late chance for Mario Balotelli. The Italian received a great ball from Philippe Coutinho and was unfortunate to see his effort parried by Eldin Jakupovic, who produced a stunning save from close range.

The late winner would hardly have been deserved. Hull did little to trouble the Reds, but Brendan Rodgers' troops displayed virtually no creativity in the attacking third. Liverpool pressed Hull back and dominated possession, but with Raheem Sterling having an off-day, there was no one adding depth or running into the box in support.

Austin Aztex manager Paul Dalglish still saw plenty of positives:

Arsenal took advantage of two mental lapses by Sunderland to record a 2-0 win, snapping a three-match winless streak.

Alexis Sanchez was on the receiving end of two gift-wrapped opportunities, first capitalising on Wes Brown's horrible intervention before latching onto a bad touch from Vito Mannone.

The win came at a cost, however, as Kieran Gibbs left the pitch with an injury, via ESPN FC's John Brewin:

Sadio Mane scored the only goal in Southampton's 1-0 win over Stoke City, firing the Saints back into the second spot on the table.

The hosts were a far cry from the dominant force that destroyed Sunderland in Week 8, but manager Ronald Koeman was very satisfied with the result and his team's attitude in obtaining it, via the club's official website:

"

We deserved to win because we created eight opportunities to score in the second half, we didn’t kill the game off, but okay, it was a great fighting win and that’s also important.

They have showed a great attitude. You know in football you can’t win easy, maybe once or twice, but you have to fight, you have to play.

I was very happy about the first half because I think we played the best football this season.

"

West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace kept it close until the final whistle, with Saido Berahino converting a penalty in the closing minutes to salvage a point for the hosts.

Sunday will see league-leaders Chelsea travel to Manchester to take on the Red Devils in Week 9's marquee fixture, while Burnley host Everton and Tottenham Hotspur welcome Newcastle United to White Hart Lane. The matchday will conclude on Monday, when Queens Park Rangers tackle Aston Villa.
