Chargers' Philip Rivers Sets Team Record for Consecutive Multi-Touchdown Games

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 24, 2014

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers set a franchise record in Thursday's 35-21 loss to the Denver Broncos by throwing multiple touchdown passes in a seventh consecutive game, per the Chargers' official Twitter account.

Rivers completed 30 of his 41 pass attempts for 252 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions against a tough Broncos defense.

He has 19 touchdown passes during the seven-game run, and with 20 through the first eight games of the season, he's on pace for a would-be career high of 40.

In the midst of his best statistical season, Rivers, 32, surpassed the previous franchise record held by none other than Dan Fouts, who threw multiple touchdown passes in six straight games during the 1981 campaign, per Pro-Football-Reference.com's Play Index.

Fouts is the all-time franchise leader in passing yards (43,040), passing touchdowns (254), interceptions (241), completions (3,297), pass attempts (5,604) and quarterback wins (86), but Rivers is drawing close in some of those categories.

Rivers' 34,582 career passing yards leave him a few seasons away from Fouts' mark in that category, but with 241 passing touchdowns, Rivers needs just 14 more to surpass the Hall of Famer.

Rivers also needs just three more wins to best Fouts' mark of 86, as the Chargers' current signal-caller has an impressive 84-52-0 regular-season record in his career, compared to the much more modest 86-84-1 record compiled by Fouts.

While the first in Chargers history, Rivers' seven-game run with multiple passing touchdowns marks the 53rd streak of seven games or longer since 1920, per Pro-Football-Reference.com's Play Index.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning tied an all-time record Thursday night, recording his 13th consecutive game with multiple passing touchdowns in the win over Rivers' Chargers.
