Neymar Transfer Lawsuit Against Barcelona Dropped by Jordi Cases

Nick AkermanOct 21, 2014

Barcelona board member Jordi Cases has dropped his lawsuit against the Blaugrana over the club's alleged inability to reveal the full extent of Neymar's transfer fee.

D. Piferrer of Marca revealed Cases—or Barca member 57,819—recently sent a letter to president Josep Maria Bartomeu highlighting he is now happy with the side's practices. Cases admits he hasn't witnessed any "criminal behaviour in corporate or accounting terms, misappropriation of funds, nor do I question the agency contracts and the endorsed services."

He originally launched accusations that former FCB president Sandro Rosell failed to detail exactly how much was paid for Neymar's services.

It was suggested Neymar's reported fee of €57 million was incorrect and that the Catalan club actually paid €74 million when add-ons were taken into account, reported by Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC.

Cases alleged that €40 million went to the player's family as a signing-on bonus, but Barca debunked suggestions by calling his claims "baseless and unnecessary," per Corrigan.

Somewhere down the line, Cases has changed his mind. Bartomeu admitted his pleasure at the decision to withdraw legal action, saying, "I can do nothing but celebrate the evidence that the club have not engaged in any criminal activity," reported by Piferrer.

Cases himself is happy to see the Barcelona board take on a more revealing stance to their business, per Piferrer

"

As a club member I am sorry that my request for information was not seen to efficiently and I applaud the current call for transparency shown by the board which you head, as demonstrated at the recent Ordinary General Assembly on 18th October.

Neymar's form has blossomed at the start of his second season with the La Liga side. He has netted 10 goals in as many appearances across the domestic division and Champions League, per WhoScored.com, and is currently outscoring Lionel Messi.

Considering Neymar only grabbed 13 goals in these competitions last season, it seems the mercurial forward is destined to post a stellar campaign.

Cases' accusations certainly provided a sideshow after the player's arrival. Neymar was forced to defend his father while trying to adjust to the Camp Nou playing style.

The 22-year-old's dedication to becoming a Barca star has been impressive—he is far more of a team player now than when he played for Santos—something he is being rewarded for during his currently prolific run.

For Cases, he succeeded in pushing Rosell out of the club. Proceedings have calmed under Bartomeu, and added transparency will go a long way to helping the board escape accusations of formulating the truth in the future. This is particularly important after Barcelona were handed a transfer ban through 2015.

Attention can now turn to the pitch, where Neymar and his colleagues continue to impress. Barca are yet to concede in La Liga this season and appear major favourites to land the Spanish title. Neymar's quality is beginning to shine through on a consistent basis and could be further improved now he doesn't have a supposedly heftier fee to justify.
