Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 3-2 thanks to a last-minute winner from Harry Wilson, as Group B is shaping up to be one of the more exciting ones heading into the second half of the group stages.
The Reds, Real and FC Basel all have six points, and qualification for the next round will likely come down to the very last matchday.
The hosts had a blistering start to the match and deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes through Cameron Brannagan, before doubling their advantage five minutes later, Tom Brewitt slotting home a rebound the Spanish side failed to deal with.
The Liverpool Echo's James Pearce couldn't only assume what the Real bench was thinking:
Wilson came close to making it 3-0, but his chip was read expertly by David Pedro Oliveros. Jerome Sinclair's blistering shot was cleared off the line just seconds later, as the Reds were all over their Spanish opponents.
Things only got worse for Los Blancos. Borja Mayoral lined up to take a penalty, blasting his effort miles over the bar. Bleacher Report UK (via propagandaphoto) shared the image:
The visitors dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half but couldn't score, giving fans a preview of what was to come in the second half.
Real came out of the dressing room on fire and opened their account within 10 minutes of the restart, as Philipp Lienhart powered a strong header past Ryan Fulton. The pressure continued, and Borja Sanchez tied things up with a stunning finish after 67 minutes.
Los Blancos now committed men forward in search for a late winner, opening themselves up for a counter-attack. And with just two minutes left on the clock, Wilson shocked the visitors by prodding the ball home, giving the Reds the win. Pearce liked what he saw from the hosts:
The German teams have underwhelmed tremendously in the tournament so far, and Bayer Leverkusen continued that trend with an embarrassing 4-1 loss at home against Zenit St. Petersburg. It took until deep in injury time for Marc Brasnic to find a consolidation goal, while the visitors also missed a penalty early in the first half.
Basel easily defeated Ludogorets 5-0, scoring three goals in the first half before taking their foot of the gas, while Paris Saint-Germain out-shot APOEL by 21 total efforts (24 to 3) on their way to an easy 3-0 victory.
Olympiacos will host Juventus on Wednesday night in the final fixture of Matchday 3.
Tuesday Recap
Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the competition on Tuesday, falling to Belgian side Anderlecht 4-3 after a highly entertaining fixture.
The hosts took the lead after just two minutes, Leya Iseka slotting home from the penalty spot. Anderlecht continued to create danger but were twice caught on the counter, as a Dan Crowley brace gave the Gunners the advantage.
Iseka equalised midway through the first half after the Arsenal defence was caught napping on a long ball, and Anderlecht started applying more and more pressure on the visitors. Two quick goals before half-time gave them a 4-2 lead, with Frank Mikal and Andy Kawaya both netting.
Anderlecht's Twitter feed shared the half-time score:
The visitors tried to fight their way back into the match in the second half but ran into Mile Svilar, Anderlecht's wildly talented goalkeeper. And when Alex Iwobi finally found some space to get a quality shot off, he directed his effort against the bar.
The Gunners found some hope with five minutes left to play, when the official pointed to the spot for a foul on Crowley. The 17-year-old converted the spot kick himself, completing his hat-trick.
Anderlecht held firm for the win, however, via Arsenal's Twitter feed:
Chelsea and Manchester City both recorded 2-0 wins over Maribor and CSKA Moscow, respectively, the English duo continuing their perfect start to the competition.
The Blues weren't expecting much from their Slovenian visitors who displayed a tremendous amount of resiliency, but a Jeremie Boga brace in the first half made the difference.
The midfielder twice combined with captain Izzy Brown, using his pace to run at the defenders before finishing calmly. Chelsea dominated the first half and could have had four or five goals, as shared by the team's Twitter feed:
The Slovenians had the better play in the second half, however, with one or two chances for a goal of their own. Boga had two excellent opportunities to score his third inside of one minute, missing the target after a great solo effort before clipping the bar from distance.
Maribor dominated position in the final 15 minutes but failed to convert any of their looks on goal, as the hosts held on for a 2-0 win. The team's perfect start in Group G continues:
City faced a difficult trip to Russia to take on CSKA, but goals from Jose Angel Pozo in each half saw the team continue their perfect run in Group E.
Moscow's colder weather appeared to slow the Citizens down early, but after a shaky opening 10 minutes, the visitors took control. Pozo's goal in the 21st minute was fully deserved, and he could have bagged a second just minutes later.
CSKA had just one good chance in the first half, Aleksandr Golovin finding the crossbar with a beautiful free kick. The Russians failed to put real pressure on City's back line in the second half, and when Pozo made it 2-0, the match was effectively over.
The club shared the goals and post-match reaction from players and coaches via Youtube:
Bayern's nightmare campaign couldn't be saved in Italy, where Matteo Adamo scored the only goal of the match after just five minutes to give Roma a 1-0 win. Athletic Bilbao didn't fare any better in Porto, losing 2-0. The Basques now trail the duo of Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk by four points with three matches left to play.
Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw against Ajax in one of Tuesday's later matches, needing a late rally inside the final 20 minutes to come back from a two-goal deficit. As shared by the Dutch club's Twitter feed, the hosts were aided by a red card for Nathan Leyder:
Adham El Idrissi gave the visitors the lead after just three minutes, and their advantage was soon doubled by captain Damian van Bruggen from the penalty spot.
Leyder was dismissed for a second bookable offence after 60 minutes, opening the door for the Blaugrana to mount a late comeback. Lionel Enguene found the back of the net in the 73rd minute and Alex Carbonell equalised just minutes later, but despite a big push for a winner, Ajax stood firm to salvage a draw.
