Crowell Misses Practice With Hip Injury
ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi had the news on Isaiah Crowell's hip:
The undrafted rookie ball-carrier has burst onto the scene in Cleveland with explosive runs and has been determined to fulfill his immense potential.
Crowell has credited former teammate Ben Tate (now with Minnesota) for helping him come on strong in his maiden season as a pro:
"I have learned a lot from the big homie @BenTateRB we working to be the best RB duo in the league. #DawgPound
— Isaiah Crowell (@IsaiahCrowell34) October 14, 2014"
There is no mention of first-year, third-round pick Terrance West in that tweet, but in light of Crowell's injury, West is part of the reason Browns fans should still be optimistic while Crowell recovers.
West ran for 100 yards at Pittsburgh in the regular-season opener, although he has not eclipsed that total since. West currently has 133 carries for 502 yards and three touchdowns, and had a critical fumble in last week's loss at Buffalo.
It would be wise for the Browns' coaching staff to exercise extra caution with Crowell because he may well have the most upside within Cleveland's rookie backfield tandem.
Thus far, he's amassed 475 yards and seven touchdowns on 107 carries.
Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan shouldn't have to adjust his play-calling tactics too much as long as the ground game still produces. However, the Browns have struggled to run as of late.
If Crowell can't go Sunday versus the Colts, there will be even more pressure on starting Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer to succeed amid a tightly contested AFC playoff race. Head coach Mike Pettine told reporters on Wednesday that the team is sticking with Hoyer for this week's game.
