Come to Think of It: The Inspiring Message of "A Glove of Their Own"

Bob WarjaJul 23, 2009

When I received the Facebook note from Bob Solomon, "coach, husband, and proud father", I must admit I was somewhat skeptical.  After all, as a writer, we often get requests to support a cause and sometimes the reality doesn't meet the hype.

But in the case of the wonderful, award-winning children's book "A Glove of Their Own," I am pleased to report to fellow 'Bleacher Creatures' that this is one grassroots movement that is more than worth your time and attention.

The story is about a group of young boys who, despite not having any real equipment, play and love the game of baseball.  However, a gift from a stranger teaches them the spirit of “play it forward” and that’s the idea behind the grassroots effort Salomon is spearheading.

In short, it is not only a truly amazing story, but it is such a worthwhile cause that I know you would be enriched by the effort.

The book is a fun, easy read that tugs at your heartstrings.  My wife and children all took turns reading the book and all came away with such a strong impression that I felt compelled to tell you about it.

Wonderfully illustrated, it is a book filled with bright, glossy images. But it also presents a message that is very inspiring and touching.  It hearkens back to a time that I recall fondly in my youth.  Yet it as relevant to our lives today as ever before.

The inspiration for this story was born from a birthday party for one of the author's children.  Unlike most birthday celebrations, this party requested donations of baseball equipment in lieu of gifts.  That equipment was donated to children who normally do without.

The central theme revolves around paying forward, giving back and extending friendship, all for the love of the game.

"A Glove of Their Own" is for the kids who pick up the bat to choose captains and pick teams, who have known the joy of playing in a neighborhood field or an empty lot.  You’ll find no coaches, no concession stands, and sometimes just an old bat and ball.  But once the first pitch is thrown, you’ll find the real heart and soul of America.  You’ll find baseball in its purest form.

"For few things in life are ever as good, as the smell of your own glove, the crack of the wood.  Or being with friends, at that one special spot and sharing what you have…with those who have not."

USAToday.com interviewed Bob Solomon, who obviously was so touched by the book that he decided to spearhead the movement to spread the word.

“I’m a Little League dad and father of two,” said Salomon. “I read this book, I got chills.  I started calling people.  I followed my heart, my passion.  Parents have loved it because it is a message to their kids to do what is fair and what’s right and it reminds them of their childhood.”

Portions of the proceeds from the sale of the book goes to donations to multiple charities, so they can collect or purchase sports equipment for kids who would otherwise go without.

By joining the cause, your school or non-profit organization can earn three dollars for every book sold.  Coach Bob and the three authors, Debbie Moldovan, Keri Conkling and Lisa Funari-Willever, obviously take the 'paying it forward' message to heart.

This movement involves professional players, including Ken Griffey, Craig Biggio, Sean Casey, Jack Hannahan, Jason Grilli, Joe Torre, Tommy John, Brent Mayne and Robb Quinlan, who were moved by the book’s heartwarming message.

"A Glove of Their Own" was released on October 1, 2008.  Since then, Bob has helped to build a grassroots movement that has enlisted the support of individuals, Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, professional athletes and kids who simply dream of becoming athletes.

Greed is certainly not the motivator behind this book.  As the Web site states:

"Beyond the words of this book is a deeper meaning of the mission behind 'A Glove of Their Own.'

"We are eager to teach the next generation the importance of giving back by becoming aware of those around us who would otherwise go without.  This book is the vehicle that will drive us to deliver new and used sporting goods equipment or funds to children in need."

Fellow BR colleague David Allen wrote two outstanding articles involving "A Glove of Their Own" that I encourage you to read, if you have not yet done so.

I am a believer in paying forward. I strongly encourage you to be, too.  It will bring out the kid in you, come to think of it.

A Glove of Their Own, is an award winning children’s book from Franklin Mason Press that is winning the hearts and minds of baseball fans everywhere.  Special thanks to Bob Salomon for his unwavering support of the project, and Debbie Moldovan, Keri Conkling and Lisa Funari-Willever.  Please take the time to visit www.agloveoftheirown.com.
