Dean Ambrose Should Defeat Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell

Sharon GlencrossSep 29, 2014

At Hell in a Cell next month, WWE's bookers should absolutely script Dean Ambrose to defeat long-term nemesis Seth Rollins in their inevitable showdown.

For one thing, Ambrose needs a solid win over his former team-mate. Having lost to Rollins at SummerSlam and then violently taken out by him on the following night's Raw in their Falls Count Anywhere match, it's time for the star to finally get some much deserved revenge.

Crucially, a victory at Hell in a Cell would hugely aid Ambrose's credibility as he attempts to climb to the top of the card.

WWE clearly has something in Ambrose. With his wild, reckless demeanor, intense charisma and unhinged but exciting behaviour, he's frequently one of the most compelling babyface characters the company has.

It's not hyperbole to say he's reminiscent of a young Steve Austin or Brian Pillman—he has the same edge and magnetic aura of danger that those two did during the Attitude Era.

Sure, Roman Reigns and John Cena have talent and are undoubtedly stars, but their characters can often seem too bland or scripted, which is somewhat of a problem.

When Ambrose shows up on air, fans understand implicitly that some crazy stuff is about to go down—at a time when WWE television often feels predictable or watered down, this is no minor thing.

In order for his growing popularity to continue, WWE has to book him to soundly defeat Rollins at the pay-per-view.

Fans may like Ambrose right now and want him to be the company's next big main eventer, but they aren't going to stay behind him if he continually loses high-profile matches. Eventually, even the most devoted fans will lose interest if their guy doesn’t deliver in the ring. We’ve seen it in the past with guys like Dolph Ziggler and Zack Ryder.

OK, so some could argue that Rollins needs the win more. After all, he has the Money in the Bank title shot and will presumably win the World Heavyweight Championship soon. WWE has to ensure he's booked well at this crucial point in his career.

But really, thanks to his previous wins over Ambrose and his solid standing in The Authority, Rollins is already protected.

He can easily withstand a loss at Hell in the Cell and bounce back soon after. No matter the outcome, he’ll be fine.

Ambrose, however, probably couldn’t suffer a clean loss at the pay-per-view without being significantly damaged. It’s the last thing he needs right now, just as he’s on the verge of becoming a big star. That makes he must leave the event victorious—it's WWE’s only viable option.
