Rory McIlroy Celebrates Ryder Cup Victory by Taking off Shirt, Putting on Kilt
UPDATE: Friday, Oct. 3, at 9:45 p.m. ET
Rory McIlroy says he has no idea how he ended up shirtless and wearing a wig-kilt combo after the Ryder Cup on Sunday night.
According to the Daily Record & Sunday Mail's Euan McLean, McIlroy says events became a bit muddled as the European team's celebration wore on into the early hours of Monday morning.
"Honestly, I don't remember how it happened," McIlroy told McLean. "The timeline sort of gets a bit fuzzy about midnight."
What the 25-year-old does remember is a prank played on him by the U.S. Ryder Cup squad. He says a few American players lured him into an awkward situation with security personnel during the festivities.
"I slipped out of the European room around 10 p.m. to join my friends and parents in the bar and I got a text from Keegan Bradley about 10:30 p.m. that was very funny, basically just inviting me to the U.S. team room...But when I got there there's two security guys at the door who said I'm not sure they're letting anyone in at the moment. I said 'What are you talking about?' and he said he'd go and check...So I'm standing there at the US team door for five minutes, which just felt so strange. Then he comes back and says Patrick Reed says they're not letting anyone in yet...Patrick Reed! So I said 'fine and went back to the European team room to find a couple of the U.S. guys waiting in there. They had obviously planned it and had a good laugh at me...Se we all piled into the U.S. team room and had a good time with everyone. It was a great way to cap off a great week.
"
Good one, America.
End of Update
For the third time in a row, Europe's finest outplayed their American counterparts and took home the Ryder Cup.
While the American side traded barbs in the aftermath of the defeat, the champions did what champions do: laugh, spray champagne and have more fun than anyone has a right to.
Of all the celebrations seen in the aftermath of Europe's Ryder Cup victory at Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland on Sunday, no one appeared to enjoy the win more than Rory McIlroy.
In a goofy—and possibly scotch-inspired—moment, the Northern Irish golfer decided to embrace local Scottish culture and throw on a tartan kilt to celebrate.
McIlroy posted an Instagram picture of himself posing with Scottish golfer Stephen Gallacher on Monday morning. In the picture, the 25-year-old golfer wore one red kilt, one red wig and zero shirts:
"Got into the Scottish swing of things last night with Stevie G!" wrote McIlroy in the caption.
Jacked, kilted and ostensibly several cocktails deep? This may be the height of post-victory McIlroy, which is nothing to scoff at, considering his penchant for slamming Jagermeister out of hallowed obelisks.
Chalk up another win for Rory, who continues to play at a high level in a career-defining year. You can't beat him—you can't even hope to contain him.
All you can do is watch McIlroy win and pray his pants remain on in the aftermath. At this rate, however, even that may be hoping for too much.
