Full Indianapolis Colts Awards at the Quarter Mark of the 2014 NFL Season

Matt MadsenSep 28, 2014

Four weeks of the NFL season are (nearly) in the books, and it's time to do what we as sports writers do: hand out awards way too early.

It's true, very little stock can be put into anything that has happened over the last month, other than maybe teams' records. However, we can't resist.

We just love giving out hardware.

From Comeback Player of the Year to MVP, let's see who is performing for the Indianapolis Colts.

Comeback Player of the Year: Ahmad Bradshaw

Ahmad Bradshaw is receiving our first honor, Comeback Player of the Year.

After losing most of 2013 to a neck injury, Bradshaw has returned to Indy with a fury. The ex-New York Giant has accounted for four touchdowns already this season, all as a receiver. He's also averaging a sparkling 5.4 yards per carry, albeit on roughly an eight-carry per-game workload.

This wasn't the easiest award for which to pick a winner, as the Colts have two other players who were in contention. Both Dwayne Allen and Reggie Wayne missed a huge portion of 2013 due to injuries, and both have been significant assets to Indianapolis this year.

Allen has recorded only 11 catches for 145 yards, but three of those catches have gone for touchdowns. Wayne, on the other hand, is currently 12th in the NFL with 307 receiving yards and 13th in the league in receptions with 23 catches. He caught his first touchdown in Week 4.

Defensive Player of the Year: D'Qwell Jackson

D'Qwell Jackson has been a boon for the Colts D this season.

Even more of a toss-up than Comeback Player of the Year, there are three players with a claim to this honor, which thankfully won't actually be handed out until more contests have been played.

After four weeks, though, we are giving it to D'Qwell Jackson. His 32 tackles rank 14th in the league, and among players with at least 32 tackles, only one can match his two sacks. Jackson also has a forced fumble to his name.

But most importantly, Jackson has instilled a sense of toughness to a defense that has been bullied and run on too often for the past few years. He's been invaluable in leading the defense in the absences of both Robert Mathis and Jerrell Freeman.

Indy's D might not be great, but it's a lot better thanks to Jackson.

Meanwhile, cornerbacks Greg Toler and Vontae Davis have been excellent in pass coverage. Toler's two picks match the team-high and he returned one of them for a touchdown. Davis has one interception and has been vital in limiting the top wideouts of opposing teams.

Best Play of the Year: Greg Toler Picks off Nick Foles

Greg Toler's first interception of the year was a wild one.

As Indianapolis was holding onto a 17-6 lead late in the first half of their Week 2 tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Nick Foles tried to go deep to wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

The Eagle quarterback's failure was Toler's success, as this play went straight to the cornerback's personal highlight reel.

Unfortunately, the Colts would go on to lose on the last play of the game, 30-27.

Best Individual Performance: Andrew Luck Against the Jacksonville Jaguars

Andrew Luck lit the Jags up. No other way to put it.
Andrew Luck lit the Jags up. No other way to put it.

No debate here. This was the definitive beatdown of the first month of the Colts season.

In fact, it may be the most impressive individual performance by any player this season across the entire league.

Andrew Luck left his horseshoe at home on Sept. 21. All he needed was his right arm.

The Colts quarterback had a superlative day, throwing for 370 yards on 31-of-39 passing, a career high 79.5 percent completions. He racked up four passing touchdowns without recording an interception, just the second time he's accomplished such a feat in his career. His 94.1 QBR rating was the fourth-highest of his career, and was third before he recorded a career-high of 96.7 in his very next game: the Week 4 win over the Tennessee Titans.

In short, luck had nothing to do with it.

Most Embarrassing Play of the Year: Coby Fleener Drops Wide Open Touchdown

Egregiously, there appears to be no video evidence on the Internet of Coby Fleener's inexcusable misstep against the Jaguars.

Leading 17-0, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Luck dropped a perfectly placed ball right into Fleener's breadbasket.

Evidently, Fleener's breadbasket had a hole in the bottom.

In the Stanford product's defense, he did own up to the mistake: "I think I just relaxed, or let it get past my eyes," he said. "Either way, it was a really frustrating play. It's one I'd love to have back. I can't make the (sun) excuse. It was a drop and it was inexcusable."

Heard that.

MVP: Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck is taking the NFL over before our eyes.
Andrew Luck is taking the NFL over before our eyes.

Just because it's predictable, doesn't make it any less true.

He leads the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns. He's on a career-pace in sacks taken and is currently annihilating his career completion percentage. Both his passer rating and QBR are miles ahead of his prior two campaigns in the league.

There isn't much to say that hasn't been said. It's unlikely that he will finish the season with 52 touchdown passes and 5,200 passing yards, but that's his current pace after four weeks. Nevertheless, his 13 scoring throws are already more than half of his single-season high of 23. He figures to join the elite quarterbacks of the NFL this year, and that status might be cemented were he to post more than 40 TD passes.

Surprising? Not likely. Of course, that won't stop fans from putting him on an even higher pedestal.
