South Africa vs. Australia: Score and Report from 2014 Rugby Championship Clash

Tom SunderlandSep 27, 2014

South Africa rode through a wave of Australian pressure to emerge from Newlands with a bonus-point victory over the Wallabies on Saturday, winning 28-10 in front of a home support.

The victory takes Heyneke Meyer's side to within one point of table leaders New Zealand, who face Argentina on Saturday evening hoping to take their fourth win of the tournament.

The winning margin was particularly astounding when one considers the Springboks were 10-8 down with 11 minutes to go, scoring three tries in the final nine minutes to turn around their fortunes with barely any time remaining.

BBC Sport confirmed the victory that sees South Africa move within touching distance of the All Blacks, however temporary that may be, while one would think Australia's title chances are now officially done:

However, as Ben Coles of Planet Rugby noted, while the result was there, South Africa still have their portions of the game to work on:

Going in at the break with Australia 10-5 up, it was a far tighter matchup than the scoreline might suggest, the two parties at one point going 26 minutes without as much as a point being scored.

Adam Ashley-Cooper and Marcell Coetzee touched down for the Wallabies and Springboks, respectively, during the first half, with Bernard Foley helping kick his side into a lead from the tee.

Both Meyer and Ewen McKenzie rung the changes as the Cape Town heat bore down, and Handre Pollard's 43rd-minute penalty was the final point contribution for quite some time.

Throughout this period, both Australia and South Africa had their chances on the whitewash, with the Wallabies even threatening to pull away, but South Africa stood firm.

In the end, that absorbed pressure and the introduction of Pat Lambie at fly-half paid dividends as a brace of Jean de Villiers tries wrapped up the fixture, Lambie himself adding his team's fourth.

How suitable it was the captain De Villiers was the man to shine brightest for the Springboks as they edged such a clutch fixture, South Africa Rugby celebrating the score, too:

It helps in adding so much more spice to the meeting between South Africa and New Zealand next Saturday at Ellis Park, the fixture that will once again determine who claims the Rugby Championship title, just as it did last year.

A re-staging of such an epic encounter is once again building up to be of massive proportions, the Springboks clinching redemption for their 24-23 loss in Perth three weeks ago.
