Ryder Cup 2014: Key Players to Watch and Predictions for International Event

Rob GoldbergSep 21, 2014

The Ryder Cup only comes around every two years, but it is always one of the most exciting golf events on the calendar.

Emotions run high in this match-play event between the best players from the United States and Europe. The two sides strive for every point in a variety of battles, including fourball, foursome and singles matches.

Europe has won five of the last six events and will look to win its third in a row thanks to home-field advantage at the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles Resort in Scotland. However, the Americans have an infusion of young talent and are looking to buck the trend.

This is certain to be a thrilling battle to watch throughout, but the title will come down to the performances of a few key players. Here is a look at the most important golfers this week and predictions for which side will take home the cup.

Rory McIlroy, Europe

After winning two major titles this year and earning the No. 1 spot in the world rankings, Rory McIlroy has clearly become the top player in the sport. He always had the talent to succeed, but he now also has the confidence to make every shot on the course.

This mindset will be important as he looks to become a leader at the Ryder Cup. He is already embracing the role, as he explained to Coleman McDowell of Golf.com:

"

I know I will have a target on my back but I love that and I am going to play up to it as much as I can. It’s a massive compliment whenever the opposition are talking about you. I know what a huge fillip it would be for them if I lose, but it is up to me to make sure it doesn’t happen. I’m a double major champion this year, and its important that I embrace that and step up and take on the responsibility.

"

The problem in this type of tournament is that he is now expected to win every event in every session. Even one loss could be a turning point in favor of the United States.

His performance will likely dictate Europe's success this week.

Sergio Garcia, Europe

Although Sergio Garcia still could not get his elusive major championship this season, it was one of the best years of the veteran's career.

TaylorMade provided a look at the Spaniard's consistency in 2014:

This did not even include his ninth-place finish at the Tour Championship. He also finished second at The Open Championship and earned top-five finishes at the Players' Championship and two different World Golf Championship events.

Although he does not always win, he knows what it takes to come through in big events. The European team will hope he can keep up his recent string of good play to win some matches.

Rickie Fowler, United States

Rickie Fowler did not get a single win this season, but that did not stop it from being one of the best years in history.

Bleacher Report's Stephen Nelson breaks down his impressive performances at majors to put him in rare company:

Fowler has taken the next step from "talented youngster" to "legitimate star." He can succeed on any course and could arguably become the best player the United States has to offer.

If the Americans want to earn a win in this matchup, Fowler will need to become a leader with some big-time performances.

Phil Mickelson, United States

Even though Phil Mickelson had one of the worst seasons of his career, he is a key member of this team thanks to his massive experience.

Lefty will compete in his 10th straight Ryder Cup, giving him an added advantage over the rest of the field.

While everyone in the event knows how to play golf, it is an extra challenge competing in the pairs events when you have never done it before. Add this to the difficulties of handling the pressures in a true "road" event, and Mickelson will be invaluable this week.

Kelly Tilghman of Golf Channel notes Mickelson should be well rested for the Ryder Cup:

If he can perform to his ability, the United States will be happy he is on the roster.

Prediction

The last two Ryder Cups have come down to the final few matches, with Europe winning each by a score of 14.5 to 13.5.

Things should be close again with both sides having plenty of talent in a competitive environment. Younger performers such as Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and others will bring a lot of energy for the Americans.

However, Europe has more experience, which will help especially in the unfamiliar alternate-ball event. Add this to a home environment of the course, and this will be yet another close win for captain Paul McGinely's squad.

Predicted Score: Europe 15, United States 13
