WWE Night of Champions 2014: Biggest Unanswered Questions Going into Event
The hype for WWE Night of Champions has created more questions than answers.
This is both a good and a bad thing. It's a good thing because these questions create curiosity that will entice fans to tune in and see these questions answered.
At the same time, some questions could be the result of bewildering booking decisions that are liable to turn viewers away.
From whether John Cena can beat Brock Lesnar (good question) to why Bray Wyatt is not advertised to compete (bad question), several unanswered questions can be raised in regard to WWE Night of Champions.
Hopefully, Night of Champions on Sunday will add clarity and closure to a series of conflicts that are in need of some answers.
Will Bray Wyatt Be Booked on the Night of Champions Pay-Per-View?
1 of 5Earlier this week, I wrote an article that noted Wyatt was not advertised to compete at WWE Night of Champions.
This would be the first time Wyatt has not competed at a WWE pay-per-view since October of last year, but that’s not to say he will not be involved in some capacity.
Wyatt recently began a feud with Big Show, which resulted in a match on Raw. The match ended in a disqualification as the Wyatt Family intervened, which indicates the feud will continue.
It’s possible that Wyatt and Big Show could be involved in either an impromptu segment at Night of Champions or even a possible match. At the very least, it would be surprising if WWE did not allot time for Wyatt to deliver one of his trademark sermons.
The break of sorts from Wyatt could be viewed as a blessing in disguise. He has already gone through all of WWE's babyfaces, and a designed absence would keep his character fresh in an age of increased programming.
Will the Divas Division Get Back on Track with a Solid Divas Championship Match?
2 of 5Just last month, women’s wrestling seemed to be going through a renaissance of sorts.
With the Brie Bella-Stephanie McMahon feud receiving main event billing and the dream feud of AJ Lee and Paige in full swing, WWE Divas were getting more exposure than usual.
Unfortunately, things have since fallen apart, violently, with the onset of the Nikki and Brie Bella spinoff feud. The segments have been poorly acted, difficult to digest and even more difficult for fans to buy into.
The Jerry Springer segment almost seemed like WWE admitting to itself that the feud had gotten away from the company. The promotion would have been better off exporting the Bella storyline to the Jerry Springer Show itself.
It’s not just the Bellas who are struggling to find footing. The AJ-Paige feud has been less about wrestling and more about mind games.
Fans still don’t seem too sure who is playing the babyface in the AJ-Paige feud. That feud has now been commingled with the Bella drama as Nikki is currently booked opposite AJ and Paige in a Triple Threat match for the Divas Championship.
In addition, PWInsider (subscription only, h/t WrestlingInc.com) reported the possibility of a sexual tension angle between the two. This will only diminish the competitive aspect of this feud, which should be the focus with Divas as talented as AJ and Paige.
What a mess.
Is It Finally Time for the Usos to Drop the WWE Tag Team Championship?
3 of 5The Usos have been carrying WWE’s tag team division ever since winning the titles early in 2014.
Despite struggling to find consistent heel challengers, the tandem has put together great matches with just about every team it has competed against.
The champs will now run with Goldust and Stardust, who have been built up as a legitimate threat for quite some time now.
Although WWE has invested a lot into the Dust brothers, the Ascension’s recent tag team title loss at NXT Takeover 2 gives reason to believe the team is very close to debuting on the main roster.
WWE does not currently have the tag team depth to build up a heel team with a series of wins before inevitably vying for the championships. In all likelihood, the Ascension will go straight for the tag team champions upon their debut.
Goldust and Stardust as heel champions would make for an awkward feud with heel challengers like the Ascension. There’s a good chance the Usos retain the tag team titles as they prepare for quite possibly the biggest threat to their throne.
Will Seth Rollins Cash in His Money in the Bank Contract?
4 of 5This is a question that has to be asked ahead of every pay-per-view or live event where the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is on the line.
This time around, Rollins cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase carries more validity than usual. Cena has been booked so strongly that it would not be too much of a surprise if he is to defeat Brock Lesnar at Night of Champions.
Win or lose, it’s likely Cena will take a significant amount of punishment from Lesnar in the main event. Getting Dean Ambrose out of the picture was part of the equation for Rollins to successfully cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase since Ambrose thwarted all of his previous attempts.
In terms of a logical WWE storyline, now would be the perfect time for Rollins to cash in his Money in the Bank contract.
Per the WWE storyline, Ambrose had refused medical attention following last month’s attack and is currently at large. He’ll only be away for so much longer.
Will John Cena Actually Defeat Brock Lesnar?
5 of 5John Cena is being booked like it’s 2007.
In the television buildup since his SummerSlam obliteration, Cena has run through multiple top stars, including Lesnar during Monday's brawl.
Both jaded and casual fans are now questioning whether or not Cena will actually go over Lesnar, which many feel will derail what has been the hottest run in years.
This dilemma is really the only hook for the Night of Champions pay-per-view, as Cena seems to have the edge.
Lesnar’s status as a world champion who ended Undertaker’s streak is a distinction more valuable than most in the history of pro wrestling.
Undertaker’s streak was just as valuable to promoting WrestleMania as the WWE World Heavyweight Championships. In some years, it was even more valuable. The streak was a mythical championship just as the WWE Championship was a tangible championship.
Now Lesnar has both.
To put an end to such an unprecedented run at a low-profile pay-per-view like Night of Champions seems counterproductive.
To do so, however, would stir a lot of publicity and could be the shocking news item that convinces fans to renew their WWE Network subscription to see what happens next.
