Loss to John Cena Would Devalue Brock Lesnar's Accomplishments in 2014

Erik BeastonSep 16, 2014

There are few, if any, WWE Superstars who can claim to have the monumental 2014 that Brock Lesnar has. After a less-than-stellar performance at the Royal Rumble against Big Show, Lesnar rebounded, making history in consecutive matches by absolutely demolishing two of the greatest icons in World Wrestling Entertainment history.

Sunday night, he has the opportunity to add to his pristine resume in 2014 by defeating John Cena for the second straight time and successfully retaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship that he captured just over a month ago at SummerSlam.

But what if he does not? What if Cena wins the match and regains the title?

If that were to happen, what would it mean for everything Lesnar has accomplished this year?

Long story short, it would devalue every one of his major victories and history-making moments.

How? Let's take a look.

Building The Beast

Everything from the repeated chair shots to Big Show, which left the giant flopping around the ringside area like a fish out of water, to the industry-shaking defeat of Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX was done with one purpose in mind: establishing Brock Lesnar as a legitimate WWE world heavyweight champion when that time came. The WWE wanted fans to buy into Lesnar despite the fact that he was a part-time worker.

As poorly as he is booked at times, Big Show is still incredibly respected by fans. That they still buy him as a giant and a legitimate main event star in the industry means that any Superstar capable of demolishing him to the extent that Lesnar did this past January is instantly cemented as a very real threat to the top of the card.

The win over The Undertaker was one that few fans could have ever expected. The Deadman had never been defeated on the grandest stage the industry had to offer, and his undefeated streak at WrestleMania had grown to mythical proportions. Knocking him off was considered impossible.

Lesnar did just that, eliciting a stunned silence that single-handedly put over the shock and awe of the feat. Not only had he conquered the streak, but he had done so by completely overwhelming The Phenom.

Those two wins established Lesnar as an unstoppable juggernaut with only one thing left to accomplish: win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in a decade.

The SummerSlam Fluke

Defeating John Cena in the fashion that he did at SummerSlam helped add to the aura of Brock Lesnar that WWE Creative has assembled in 2014. His complete and utter demolition of the top star in the industry, in the closing match of one of the most prestigious events in WWE, was a performance of mythological proportions.

No one could have ever imagined WWE's top hero falling in such decisive fashion to anyone, regardless of whether that person was the hulking Brock Lesnar.

Should Cena come back just one month later and defeat Lesnar, the importance and uniqueness surrounding that SummerSlam bout would be for naught. The Superman-esque babyface would once again have overcome the odds and slayed the beast, leaving many to wonder why Lesnar was given a one-month title reign in the first place.

Why Can't It Happen?

Losing to John Cena would unravel all that had been done to build Lesnar since the start of the year. Worse yet, it would kill the attraction that is the Beast Incarnate. He has been built to such a level that fans believe he is unstoppable and unbeatable at this point in his career. With a lack of legitimate main event stars at the top of the card, tearing down one of the few draws still left at this point would be an booking misstep the company may not be able to recover from (at least in the short term).
