The New York Giants' season has gotten off to a rocky start, and it only got worse after Week 2 as recently signed cornerback Walter Thurmond is reportedly out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle.
Pro Football Talk reported the injury that Thurmond suffered in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals:
The report from Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio indicates an MRI will take place on Monday, but only to determine the extent of his injury. After Thurmond left Sunday's game, he sounded optimistic about his injury.
“It’s kind of sore right now,” Thurmond told ESPNNewYork.com's Kieran Darcy. “Hopefully it’s not too bad, where I can come back very quickly from this. I’ll know more in the next couple days.”

Thurmond is technically a second-string cornerback on the Giants' depth chart, but regularly sees the field as he specializes in covering slot receivers. Alongside starting corners Prince Amukamara and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Giants had carved out an important role for Thurmond.
The fifth-year pro came over from Seattle in the offseason and dazzled while replacing Brandon Browner in the Seahawks' vaunted Legion of Boom secondary. After starting in the Super Bowl and helping lead his team to a resounding championship, he signed with the Giants in free agency.
It's promising that the Giants still have their two starting cornerbacks intact, but Thurmond saw the field as much as most starters. Trumaine McBride should see much more playing time with Thurmond out, but it won't help a Giants passing defense that is already below average to start 2014.
