Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis' Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2

Scott PolacekSep 14, 2014

Michael Crabtree wasted little time making fantasy football owners happy in the San Francisco 49ers’ Sunday night showdown against the Chicago Bears.

Here is a look at his final stats, which included a first-quarter touchdown catch, as well as those from tight end Vernon Davis:

The wide receiver hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the first quarter to open up the scoring in the game. The team’s official Twitter account had a highlight of the play:

Davis also got in on the first-half action with two catches for 31 yards. We know that Davis is an elite option at tight end in a position that isn’t exactly loaded with fantasy difference-makers. In fact, he hauled in two touchdowns in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

However, Davis had to leave the game with an ankle injury, as the team pointed out on Twitter. It is certainly worth keeping an eye on Davis' status moving forward in the week. If he cannot go for Week 3 or beyond, it may increase the value of Crabtree and the other San Francisco receiving options.

After all, Kaepernick has to throw it to someone.

While Davis was only targeted three times in the game, the fact that Crabtree’s touchdown came on a play from the red zone is encouraging for fantasy owners. Scoring opportunities are what separates the difference-makers from the average in fantasy football.

If Crabtree consistently gets involved in San Francisco’s passing attack near the goal line, he will rack up the fantasy points this year.

Crabtree missed most of the 2013 campaign, but he did tally 1,105 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2012. It will be important for him to stay on the field early this year so he can continue to develop his chemistry and timing with Kaepernick, especially after missing significant time a year ago.

As for Davis, he totaled 850 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013, although he is yet to top 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Still, his overall athleticism and ability to go up and get the ball in the end zone make him an intriguing fantasy option every week.

What's more, San Francisco's rushing attack, which is strong with Kaepernick and Frank Gore, means defenses have to respect the run. That could open up the field and fantasy scoreboard for Crabtree and Davis.

As long as they are both healthy.
