Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana 2 Results: Breaking Down Rematch

Scott PolacekSep 15, 2014

There may have been the slightest of doubts in the aftermath of Floyd Mayweather’s first victory against Marcos Maidana regarding the winner, but there was absolutely zero on Saturday.

Mayweather controlled the bout from the opening moments with an array of dodges, speed and overall boxing acumen. He also eliminated any hope for a third match between the two fighters, even if Maidana did hang with Mayweather better than most the first time around.

Mayweather retained his welterweight and super welterweight titles in a unanimous 12-round decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and extended his incredible record to a perfect 47-0. What's more, he earned at least $32 million from the fight. In total, his purses are now more than $100 million in the last year.

Speaking of Mayweather’s head-turning earnings, SportsCenter pointed out just how much the champion brought in during Saturday’s victory:

This match was all about accuracy and speed from Mayweather compared to reckless swings from Maidana. In fact, Maidana actually threw significantly more punches (572) than the victor (326), but it was Mayweather who landed more (166-128).

That's right: Maidana attempted 246 more punches than Mayweather but landed 38 fewer. Safe to say, that wasn't in the plan for the challenger.

Those types of statistics are not going to get Maidana a win against many boxers at all, let alone the current king of the sport. Still, Maidana actually disagreed with the decision in his comments to the media: “I was pressuring him and I was the aggressor. I won the fight.”

Anyone who watched Saturday’s fight would likely scoff at that notion.

Outside of the raw statistics in Mayweather’s favor, it was clear that he is just a more technically proficient boxer. He dodged all of Maidana’s heavy blows, landed jabs when he needed to and was the faster and more athletic fighter in the ring.

The outcome was really never in doubt, and the only actual drama came in the eighth round, when Mayweather reacted as if Maidana bit him on the wrist. Mayweather suggested as much, telling reporters: "We were tangled in the center of the ring and I didn't realize what it was. Then I saw that he bit me. After the eighth round my fingers were numb, I couldn't use my left hand."

Mayweather wasted absolutely no time gesturing to the ref that Maidana bit him and even went to the announcers to voice his complaints.

While nothing actually came of the biting controversy, Maidana was penalized a point for tackling Mayweather. The tackling and biting seemed like acts of desperation which weakened Maidana's proclamation that he was the actual winner Saturday.

Looking ahead, Mayweather’s absolute dominance compared to the last time he fought Maidana means there is no need for a rematch.

Sure, the first fight was close (which inspired Mayweather to offer an opponent a rematch for only the second time in his career), but there is absolutely no doubt that Maidana just isn’t in the same league as Saturday’s winner.

Maidana, who is known for throwing power punches, never even connected on any big swings, which was his only real chance to shock the boxing world.

Fans hoping to finally see Mayweather lose will have to look elsewhere.
