Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 Results: Money's Round-by-Round Consistency Key to Win

Timothy RappSep 14, 2014

Fighters may be more fun to watch, but boxers normally win.

That was the theme when Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana fought for the second time. While Maidana did everything he could to get Mayweather off his game—from crowding him, possibly biting his glove and  taking him down to the mat—the man they call Money wasn't fazed.

In fact, he was about as clinical and methodical as one could be in the ring. He kept his cool, he certainly kept his distance and he picked Maidana apart with his incisive punching and brilliant movement. It would be a bit harsh to describe Maidana as a kid with a blindfold trying to hit a moving pinata, but at times the bout resembled something similar.

Of course, Mayweather wasn't completely satisfied with his own performance, telling Mark Whicker of USA Today:

"

I give myself a C. I can fight a lot better than that. I really thought I was better in the first fight.

I didn't know what happened to my hand. We clinched, my hand got underneath and he bit my middle three fingers. I couldn't use my left hand. My middle finger busted open. He said he put my hand in his mouth.

He's a rugged guy, extremely dirty, but rugged. I believe he needs to move over to MMA.

"

Consider that Mayweather's parting shot because, let's be honest, there is absolutely no need for another rematch. It's pretty clear that Mayweather is in another stratosphere to Maidana.

Here's another perspective on just how easily Mayweather won this match, via ESPN Stats & Information:

Maidana had exactly two ways of winning this fight: by crowding Mayweather and mitigating his superior speed or by knocking him to the mat. He was never able to do the former—in part because the match's referee, Kenny Bayless, regularly separated the fighters—and thus, he never got close to doing the second.

A fighter like Maidana was always likely to either beat Mayweather or look outclassed against him. That the first fight was so much more compelling than the second was both a testament to Maidana's approach and preparation and Mayweather's willingness to stand in and make things a fight for entertainment's sake.

But it was clear enough watching the second bout that when Mayweather goes full Mayweather and decides to tactically dismantle an opponent, well, there are few (if any) in the world who can deal with it.

This is why everyone wants to see Mayweather finally face Manny Pacquiao. No, Pacquiao isn't the technical fighter that Mayweather is, but he's no slouch in that area, either, and his fast hands, power and unique angles would all pose a serious threat to Money.

Styles make fights, as the old cliche goes. Well, so too does talent. And it just so happens that Pacquiao has both the style and the talent to beat Mayweather.

Whether he would is another question entirely. But at least the result wouldn't feel so inevitable in a Mayweather fight for once. From start to finish, he disassembled Maidana like the world's best "Operation" player. It's time he faced somebody who could truly challenge him.
