Floyd Mayweather Injury: Updates on Fighters Hand After Bite vs. Marcos Maidana
Floyd Mayweather's pursuit of the 50-0 mark is unscathed after Saturday's triumph over Marcus Maidana in their highly anticipated rematch, but the man himself is not after a strange occurrence in the eighth round.
There, the two locked up and Mayweather seemed to have his glove on Maidana's face, before Money jerked back in pain and caused a stoppage in the fight while the referee investigated biting allegations.
Showtime Sports captured Mayweather's reaction after the match, where he revealed he finished the fight with a numb hand:
MLive's David Mayo had more after the fight:
For his part, Maidana stated through a translator after the fight that he took part in no such activities:
Regardless, Mayweather wound up the victor via unanimous decision thanks to scorecards from the judges that read 116-111, 116-111 and 115-112. After dominating most of the fight, Mayweather clearly took his foot off the gas in the final few rounds—much to the displeasure of those in attendance—although it is difficult to say whether that was a strategic decision or due to a potential injury.
Barring an unforeseen hiccup in recovery from any alleged injury after Saturday night, Mayweather will be back in the ring next May, as he told the pay-per-view he plans on doing regardless of his opponent.
By then, this biting controversy should be an afterthought.
