Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana 2 Results: Twitter Reacts to Title Rematch

Matt FitzgeraldSep 13, 2014

In a similar way to how he defeated him the first time around, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was more precise and didn't throw nearly as many punches as his opponent Marcos Maidana on Saturday.

Mayweather defeated Maidana by unanimous decision, improving his record to a still-perfect 47-0 in a marquee title bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Although the outcome may have been perceived as an inevitability by some, there were several moments throughout the 12 rounds that were worth documenting in this rematch.

Showtime Sports tweeted the scores and showered praise on Mayweather for what it felt was another virtuoso performance:

ESPN announcer Pablo Viruega offered his final tally:

MLive.com's David Mayo had a similar, lopsided outcome:

Bryan Armen Graham of Mic referenced the lucrative paydays both "Money" Mayweather and Maidana would receive:

Entering the final round, it was clear who had the upper hand, as SHO Stats highlighted:

At the approximate midway point of the bout, Maidana tried even harder to be the aggressor to no avail, per Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix:

Michael Woods of TheSweetScience.com sensed "El Chino" was fading as the rounds wore on:

Maidana spoke of his hopes to not fade this time around.

"I think I did get tired in the first fight. I have to pace myself a little better and this time around I will be better," said Maidana, via ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "If the knockout comes, great, but I'm ready to go the distance, as well. I'm ready to make history."

During the eighth round, Mayweather accused Maidana of biting him, per Rafael:

Maidana came out on May 3 swinging for the proverbial fences. Although it was a good short-term strategy, Mayweather adjusted and was far more proficient.

Saturday saw a familiar scene unfold, and it backfired on Maidana even more quickly. It appeared Maidana didn't learn much from the first encounter. Or Mayweather is just that good at executing what he wants to do in the ring.

Mayweather was a bit self-critical afterwards, though, per Showtime Sports:

In perhaps a delusional bit of post-fight chatter, Maidana made his own case that he'd come out on top:

For Maidana, it was a valiant effort but a somewhat disappointing one that didn't see him vary his strategy at all. Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis weighed in:

The bravado he had was admirable in that Maidana figured he could pummel his way to a win.

It just wasn't in the cards—and it reflected on the judges' cards. Maidana couldn't connect on the majority of his punches, which was his only real chance to make it a competitive fight. That leaves him in a difficult position with regard to his next move.

LaceupBoxing defended Mayweather's conservative approach toward the conclusion of Saturday's fight:

Former NFL offensive lineman Jason Pinkston isn't the only one who will insist that Mayweather takes on Manny Pacquiao sooner rather than later:

ESPN personality Skip Bayless certainly subscribes to that school of thought:

The first tilt with Maidana was Mayweather's by majority decision, and he an even clearer winner on this occasion. Based on that outcome, those who criticize Mayweather's quality of opponents won't relent anytime soon.

Mayweather may have won, yet he didn't really boost his resume or his status among boxing's all-time greats. Taking on a tougher foe in the next fight will is something Mayweather must consider. However, he has a limited number of bouts left in his career, so it remains to be seen how he'll approach his future.

Despite a lackluster showing by his own high standards, Mayweather still got the "W" as he always has, and can at least enjoy that for now.
