WWE Programming's Best Match for Week of September 13

Brad JonesSep 13, 2014

This week saw another NXT special event grace the WWE Network and put the main roster on notice with a glimpse into the future. That's not to say that there wasn't some great action outside of the developmental leagues; it's just that the so-called "rookies" of NXT are excelling on a very consistent basis.

When the first Takeover event aired back in May, there was a real feeling that the stars of NXT left the main roster with a hard act to follow at Payback just a few days later—and the same is certainly true in this case, with Night of Champions being held next weekend.

It's often said that the last boom period for pro wrestling was caused by the competition between the then-WWF and WCW; at present, it looks like the next impetus for the Superstars of the WWE roster to up their game might come from within.

Honourable Mentions

Sin Cara might have been overshadowed by partner Kalisto in their shot at the NXT Tag Team titles at Takeover II, but if you only watch one of the luchadore's matches from this week, it should be his Superstars clash against Justin Gabriel.

Both men made the most of a good chunk of time and their great chemistry to put on a memorable encounter that should do a lot to raise their stock. Both are underrated and underutilized, so it's encouraging to see them given the opportunity to show off what they're capable of.

The cage match that opened Raw this week between Bray Wyatt and Chris Jericho wasn't an all-time classic but was certainly notable enough to be worth a watch. The feud between the two hasn't quite reached the heights that it could have over the course of its duration, but that shouldn't reflect on the good performances that both have been putting in.

The consistently entertaining pairing of The Miz and Damien Sandow faced off against the odd couple of R-Truth and Dolph Ziggler on SmackDown this week, balancing some entertaining interplay between tag partners with enough solid action to keep things from getting silly.

Match of the Week for September 13: Adrian Neville vs. Tyler Breeze vs. Sami Zayn vs. Tyson Kidd

With months of build and considerable hype, it would have been all too easy for this long-awaited Fatal 4-Way match to disappoint—but it delivered quite comprehensively.

A nearly 40-minute match allowed plenty of time for each man to be showcased, as well as bringing the much-teased rivalry between Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville to the fore. This is really the gold standard for a main event at a big show; it was well built over a long period of time, boasted a bevy of top-notch action in the ring and told a great story that could feasibly set up months of NXT programming.

Many thought that the bout would reset the NXT landscape ahead of a bunch of impending arrivals from new talent, but instead it provided a fitting end to the four-man feud and refocussed on the more personal issue between Zayn and Neville. Televised wrestling is all about the ongoing narrative, but it's rarely done as masterfully as it was in this match.

What's more is that the shift in focus wasn't done at the cost of Breeze and Kidd. Both were given plenty of time to shine in the bout, with Breeze perhaps delivering the best performance of his career thus far. Only one man could come out of this match with the title around his waist, but all four left the ring looking more of a star than when they each went in.

NXT has produced many terrific matches in its relatively short lifespan, and this might just be its crowning achievement thus far. It's an exciting time for the developmental promotion and a tantalizing glimpse into what could very well be the future of WWE.

Did another match stand out to you this week? How do you feel about the ongoing Titus O'Neil/Adam Rose series? Did Raw's Jerry Spring segment deserve more time than the NXT showcase?
