WWE Main Event Results: Winners, Twitter Reaction and Analysis from September 9
Welcome to Bleacher Report's recap of this week's Main Event. Here is where we take a look at what happened on the show, examining the winners, reactions to matches and any possible ramifications coming out of the program.
This week's episode featured what has become the standard four-match setup. One match was good, two were just okay and one was pretty bad. Basically, it was an average show.
One of the things that used to be great about Main Event was that it seemed like a show where all the usual storylines were thrown out the window. That is no longer the case, but we still tend to get at least one good match out of every taping.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Fans were treated to yet another surprise appearance by some NXT talent in the form of a match featuring The Ascension. While Main Event is not as big of a stage as Raw, it's still a big step up to be featured on any show with the main roster.
Let's take a look at everything that went down on Main Event this week.
Seth Rollins vs. Jack Swagger
Seth Rollins opened the show with a promo addressing his former Shield teammates. Eventually Zeb Colter and Jack Swagger came out and talked a little trash before the match got started.
Nobody really had control for very long. Both men traded offense throughout the match, but it was Rollins who ended up winning with a Curb Stomp.
While there was certainly entertainment to be had, this felt somewhat average because we all know both men are capable of so much more.
The pace wasn't as quick as it could have been and there wasn't as much technical wrestling as would be expected from these two. It wasn't a disappointing bout, but it wasn't spectacular either.
Winner: Seth Rollins
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights:
- It was great to see the crowd really getting behind Swagger. It's just too bad WWE isn't letting him win lately.
- Considering Rollins took a huge dive off the cage on Monday, it's impressive to see him back in the ring the next night.
- Seeing Swagger lose without Bo Dallas there to insult him felt like a mistake. If Swagger is going to have a losing streak while someone else taunts him, that person needs to be there to dish out the insults every single time.
Twitter Reaction:
Zack Ryder vs. Cesaro
Zack Ryder got a jobber's entrance for this bout, which should come as no surprise. While Ryder was able to get in a little offense, this was all about Cesaro.
Even though getting a win should always be good for a Superstar, beating Ryder has become the equivalent to beating Barry Horowitz in 1994. It really doesn't mean anything.
Cesaro picked up a really quick win via submission. The hold he used was almost like an inverted Texas cloverleaf. It was a creative and surprising way for him to win.
Winner: Cesaro
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights:
- How sad is it that I was able to fill in the spot for the winner, and be right, before the first bell even rang? How is there no #PushRyder campaign on Twitter?
- Cesaro actually hit the Cesaro Swing instead of just teasing it. The crowd was really excited, but then he stopped after three swings and applied his submission hold.
- Cesaro called himself the "King of Wrestling." It shouldn't take long for everyone to start talking about his old tag team with Chris Hero.
- WWE did not put this match on YouTube, so instead you get to see a video from Raw featuring some of the NXT stars that appeared.
Twitter Reaction:
Titus O'Neil vs. Adam Rose
This week's obligatory comedy match featured Titus O'Neil taking yet another loss to Adam Rose. Just like their previous encounters, the bunny had a lot to do with the outcome.
Heath Slater tried to help his partner, but the bunny took him out with a kick to the head right before he was knocked off the apron by Titus as Rose was rolling him up.
It seems like this storyline is building to the bunny being Rose's tag team partner. Everyone has their theories on who is under the mask, but we will have to continue waiting to see who it is. All we know for now is that he favors a superkick.
Winner: Adam Rose
Grade: D
Notes and Highlights:
- Heath Slater and Big Titus channeled Elmer Fudd a bit when trying to catch the bunny backstage. Having grown up watching Elmer Fudd, I appreciated what they were trying to do.
- The failed attempt to throw a net on the bunny backstage was actually kind of funny. The Looney Tunes references can be funny if used in the right way and kept to a minimum.
- If they are booked to be humorous and not just a joke, Slater and O'Neil might be able make this team work.
Twitter Reaction:
Los Matadores vs. The Ascension
WWE and NXT fans got yet another bonus this week as The Ascension made their Main Event debut against Los Matadores.
Konnor and Viktor looked good against Diego and Fernando, but this wasn't as good as the other NXT match we saw on Raw this week.
It was too short for the talented duo from developmental to really show off, but this wasn't about them making a huge impact. This was about pushing NXT Takeover.
Hopefully fans do not look at this as all these two are capable of, because anyone who watches NXT knows that Konnor and Viktor will be a force to be reckoned with on the main roster.
Winners: The Ascension
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights:
- WWE should have had Kalisto and Sin Cara come out at some point. It would have helped push the feud a little more heading into Thursday's event.
- The announcers said El Torito is still out with injury. It's hard to say if that is a good or bad thing right now.
- The NXT Tag Team Championship match at Takeover should be a 1,000 times better than this was.
Twitter Reaction:
"I just realized The Ascension main evented on their debut! They deserve it! #MainEvent @ViktorRiseWWE @KonnorWWE THE ASCENSION WILL RISE!
