Texas A&M Football: 5 Aggies Who Are Headed for Postseason Awards
The Texas A&M football team has a number of players who will be up for postseason awards in 2014. The Aggies are ranked No. 7 in the nation and the kind of attention a top-10 ranking brings will result in consideration for conference and national awards for individual players on the team.
The Aggies have players on both sides of the ball who are among the best in the SEC and the nation. Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin and his staff have done a tremendous job of recruiting talent to College Station.
The Aggies are beginning to reap the rewards of consecutive top-10 recruiting classes that Sumlin has signed during the past two years. They have a nice mix of young talent and veteran players on the 2014 team.
This is a look at some of the players on the 2014 Aggie team who will be considered for conference and national awards.
LT Cedric Ogbuehi
1 of 5
Senior left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi is one of the best offensive tackles in the nation. He will be considered for the Outland Trophy, along with All-SEC and All-American teams.
Ogbuehi is playing left tackle for the Aggies, which has produced All-Americans Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He is projected by many to be the third All-American left tackle in as many years for the Aggies.
Ogbuehi is also projected to follow Joeckel and Matthews' footsteps into the first round of the NFL draft. If he is selected in the first round it would mark the third year in a row that the Aggies' left tackle was selected in Round 1.
Ogbeuhi has not allowed a sack during the first two games of the season. As long as he continues his strong play, he should expect to be in the running for multiple postseason awards.
QB Kenny Hill
2 of 5
Texas A&M sophomore quarterback burst onto the national scene with a record-breaking performance in his first game with 511 yards passing in a victory over then No. 9 ranked South Carolina.
Most were expecting a drop-off at quarterback with Johnny Manziel moving on to the NFL, but Hill's performance on the road on national television opened a lot of eyes. He started the first game of his college career and broke Manziel's school record for passing yards in a game.
For his performance Hill was awarded with the SEC's offensive player of the week award. If he continues to put up good numbers in Kevin Sumlin's system, he will challenge for All-SEC and possible All-American honors at quarterback.
If the Aggies keep winning games, then Hill will receive Heisman consideration. He will need to lead the Aggies to victories over Alabama or Auburn to become a legitimate candidate, but nothing is out of reach at this point.
DE Myles Garrett
3 of 5
Texas A&M true freshman defensive end Myles Garrett may be the most impactful freshman defender to come through Aggieland since Sam Adams took the field back in 1991.
Garrett has been a disruptive force in both of the Aggies' games. He has registered three tackles for loss and three sacks in his first two college games.
Garrett has basically lived in the offense's backfield. Aggie defensive Mark Snyder coordinator has already begun to move Garrett around on the defensive line to create mismatches. He lined up at defensive tackle for a couple of snaps against Lamar.
If Garrett stays healthy he will be a shoe-in for freshman All-American teams and will likely earn first-team All-SEC honors. He is arguably the Aggies' best defensive player right now and maybe the best natural pass-rusher in the SEC.
WR Malcome Kennedy
4 of 5
Senior receiver Malcome Kennedy leads Texas A&M with 17 receptions for 170 yards through two games. He has also scored one touchdown.
Kennedy is the elder-statesman of a receiving corps that features two freshmen and a sophomore among the four starters. In Kevin Sumlin's offense Kennedy could easily grab 80 passes for over 1,000 yards in 2014.
Those numbers would make Kennedy one of the top receivers in the nation and would thrust him into consideration for All-Conference and All-American honors. Kennedy is surrounded by talented receivers in Speedy Noil, Ricky Seals-Jones and Josh Reynolds.
As the other receivers grow into their roles on the team, they may take some of the receptions away from Kennedy. However, it appears that he is Kenny Hill's security blanket so when the games are tight Hill will look for Kennedy.
Aggie fans should expect Kennedy to earn All-SEC honors at the end of the year.
FS Armani Watts
5 of 5
Armani Watts is the best young safety to play for the Aggies since Terrence Kiel donned the maroon and white in 2002. Watts is a true freshman who beat out senior safety Floyd Raven for the starting job at free safety.
Watts showed a national television audience why he is the starter in his first career game when he delivered two bone-jarring hits that caused incompletions and snagged an interception.
He currently ranked third on the team with nine total tackles and leads the team in passes broken up with three. Watts has exceptional recovery speed and is a natural when it comes to making plays on the ball in the air.
Like Garrett, Watts should receive a lot of consideration from freshmen All-American teams and is a candidate to earn All-SEC honors.
