WWE Is Lacking Fresh Challengers for Brock Lesnar After Night of Champions

Sharon GlencrossSep 9, 2014

Sure, Brock Lesnar is on a roll right now, but a serious lack of challengers for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship (after he's done with John Cena) could be a potential issue.

One problem is that with Daniel Bryan and Dean Ambrose currently out, the company doesn't have nearly enough top babyface names to challenge the former MMA fighter for his belt.

You could put forward Roman Reigns as a potential foe after Night of Champions, but it's far too soon to do a Reigns vs. Lesnar match. Reigns might not be ready yet. Besides, that clash needs to wait until WrestleMania 31—the only platform big enough to crown Reigns as the new top babyface and dethrone Lesnar.

According to reports from F4Wonline (via WrestlingInc.com), WWE management may have a solution: The Big Show is apparently in line to take on Lesnar.

While Big Show may be a decent performer, I simply can't see him being a major babyface who can help carry Raw and SmackDown—even short term.

For one thing, his character is stale. He’s been around for years, has turned too many times to count and has seemingly done everything he can do for the company. His dull title feud with Randy Orton last year doesn't bode well, either.

For the record, Orton vs. Big Show at Survivor Series also had a mediocre buyrate number, calling into question the giant's drawing ability, as WrestlingInc.com mentions.

Big Show vs. Lesnar wouldn't be a disaster, of course—both guys are too talented for that. But it would hardly be an intriguing main event feud and may end up stalling Lesnar's momentum considerably.

One option to give Lesnar some new opponents would be to turn some people.

Orton isn't really going anywhere as a heel right now—why not turn him and put him into a feud with the former MMA star? At least it would be a new feud and would provide some good matches and promos.

Giving Bray Wyatt a run as Lesnar's babyface rival is another option. Wyatt's heel character is stagnant and could desperately use some freshening up.

Wyatt wouldn't have to defeat Lesnar or win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship—he's not ready for anything like that—but it would be decent filler, if nothing else. The mic exchanges between Wyatt and Paul Heyman would likely be good television too.

Summarily, WWE obviously has something special with Lesnar and his title reign at the moment, but only some new opponents are going to keep that momentum going. The writers on the booking team have to take action—preferably as soon as possible—and start turning some people to go against the champion in the upcoming weeks and months.
