Overview
Cricket in Ireland continues to blossom and the Irish continue to get better and better. They hammered Scotland in the opening ODI on Monday, winning by seven wickets and 80 balls still to spare.
Just one batsman from Scotland managed to pass the 25-run mark after they were stuck in to bat. The visitors managed just a lowly total of 172 in 40.3 overs before being all out. Craig Young, who made his debut in this match, was the most impressive of the Irish bowlers, finishing with figures of 10-0-46-5.
Although Ireland's chase had its wobbles with a couple of wickets early on, they got there comfortably in the end with Kevin O'Brien's unbeaten 56 off 56 proving enough to get the hosts over the line.
The two sides now go at it again on Wednesday as all teams who qualified for the World Cup ramp up their preparations. The idea, for all teams playing in one-day games, is to try and test out a number of combinations in order to ensure they have the right balance for the World Cup.
In an audio interview posted on Ireland Cricket’s website, O’Brien hinted that there might be a few changes to the Ireland side for the second ODI, but it will all “depend on the conditions on the day.”
It’s unlikely that Scotland will be quite as poor as they were in the first match, though, and both sides will also be looking to find some momentum before heading off to Australia for even more World Cup prep.
Key players
Ireland
Craig Young has been growing in stature as a cricketer and announced his arrival on the one-day scene with a five-for, opening the bowling in the first match. If he plays, it will be interesting to see whether he can back up that first performance with more of the same.
Scotland
Michael Leask was Scotland's standout batsman in the last match, as the only player to pass 25. He managed 50 for his team in the end. Having that kind of stability in the lower order can be really handy and while he'll be hoping he won't need to dig so deep again, at least Scotland know there is some kind of respite lower down the order.
