Ian WhartonSep 7, 2014

The Miami Dolphins were able to recover from a mistake-ridden first half and defeat the New England Patriots 33-20 in Week 1.

According to NFLPickWatch.com, the Patriots were picked by 94 percent of all NFL experts across various platforms, but the Dolphins proved them wrong.

Let’s take a look at what the Dolphins’ coaches and players had to say about the game, along with reactions from NFL media members.

"

Not only do Dolphins outscore Patriots, 23-0, in second half but outgain them 223-67 after intermission.

— Barry Jackson (@flasportsbuzz) September 7, 2014"

The Dolphins’ second-half dominance will be a hot topic this week as we analyze the game tape. The execution of the offense and defense was significantly better.

"

#Bills, #Jets and #Dolphins all start 1-0. #Patriots start 0-1. That has never happened in the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.

— Erik Frenz (@ErikFrenz) September 7, 2014"

Beating the Patriots in such a dominant second-half showing should put all upcoming opponents on red alert. There’s no question this was an impressive victory.

Knowshon Moreno displayed power and emotion, carrying the Dolphins to a win
"

Statement win by the Dolphins today. They outplayed the Patriots in every phase. Brady was under pressure all day.

— Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) September 7, 2014"

If there are any more talented defensive fronts than what the Dolphins possess, it’s a small number. The pass rush had a tremendous impact on Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

"

#Dolphins rookie LB Chris McCain is emotional in the locker room. It's been quite a journey w/his troubled past. He got a sack, punt block.

— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) September 7, 2014"

Last week, we talked about why Chris McCain is the answer to the Dolphins’ linebacker issues. He didn’t log any snaps at linebacker, instead being an edge-rusher with a hand in the ground, but the skill set is there. He should play more as time goes on.

"

The best part about the Dolphins win is that they could've been even better. 3 turnovers and still beat New England by 13.

— Adam Kuperstein (@AKuperstein) September 7, 2014"

The mistakes were bountiful, including drops, fumbles and an interception, but the Dolphins offense kept humming throughout the day. There’s a lot of room for improvement.

"

Wallace on Philbin: "The way he’s acting around the team, the way he’s interacting with the players, that’s going to take us to the top."

— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) September 7, 2014"
The Dolphins put pressure on Brady throughout the entire game, and eventually won the war of attrition.
"

New England managed 47 total yards on 37 plays after halftime. Quite a performance by the MIA defense

— Jeff Risdon (@JeffRisdon) September 7, 2014"

Major credit should go to the defense and defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle. He adjusted how the defensive backs played, and it worked wonderfully.

"

Tannehill told me Branden Albert apologized to him: "We gotta keep you cleaner." Tannehill laughed. Albert clearly wasn't here last year.

— Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) September 7, 2014"
It wasn't Tannehill's best game, but he was much more effective in the 2nd half
"

Since Tom Brady became New England's starting QB in 2001, this is the first time the Patriots have had sole possession of last place.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 7, 2014"

This likely won’t last, but Dolphins’ fans should relish this feeling.

"

Good vibes overall in the #Dolphins locker room. They understand it's a big win but also that it's only Week 1.

— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) September 7, 2014"

This is very encouraging to see. Winning Week 1 is great but not the end of the season. The team must keep things in perspective and keep winning.

"

Moreno says he doesn't remember his TD run because he was so jacked up. "I'm jacked up right now," he said.

— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) September 7, 2014"

Moreno had an inspiring game. After he started rolling, his emotion clearly helped his teammates become energized and play better.

The difference between settling for field goals and scoring touchdowns is huge; Miami scored just enough touchdowns to win comfortably.
"

"We got a lot of stuff to prove to the world," Mike Wallace on the Patriots upset.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) September 7, 2014"

Having an underdog mindset is great for big games, and it helped Miami recover from a poor second quarter performance.

"

Mike Wallace: "Remember what happened after Patriots win last year – we lost 2 in a row and missed playoffs. You don’t want to get too high"

— Andrew Abramson (@AbramsonPBP) September 7, 2014"

Winning Week 1 is always a major benefit for an organization because of the positive emotion that comes from the fanbase. Beating a division rival like the Patriots is even more exciting because of their stature within the league. The Dolphins should celebrate this victory and use it as motivation as they continue to seek wins this season.
