WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from September 5
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show. I also provide some predictions on the direction of storylines.
This week's show featured less matches than the average SmackDown in favor of having a supersize main event featuring 10 men.
Every storyline that is expected to be featured at Night of Champions was addressed in some way during the program, but a few notable names were missing this week. Miz and Randy Orton were especially noticeable by their absence.
But the one shocking thing is that there were no women from Total Divas outside of the Bellas to appear. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.
Let's take a look at everything that took place on this week's SmackDown.
Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen
1 of 7John Cena came out and immediately got a cheap pop by mentioning that he is wearing the color for the University of Nebraska, which is where this show was taped.
It actually seemed like a pro-Cena crowd. They started chanting his name pretty loud in the middle of his promo.
Kane and Seth Rollins interrupted Cena and said he was overcompensating and having a mid-career crisis. Roman Reigns also came down and said that with Randy Orton not being in the building, his focus was solely on Kane and Rollins.
Kane brought out the Wyatt Family, but soon it became a very crowded arena as Chris Jericho, Mark Henry, Big Show and Triple H each came out.
As expected, Triple H put all 10 of these men in a tag match for later in the evening. He even did a little Teddy Long impression and used Long's music as he was leaving.
Despite being very predictable, this was a decent way to open the show. There was a lot of star power and Triple H being kind of funny saved it from being boring.
Grade: B
Some notes from the match:
- John Cena sounded like he was in a 12-step program. "My name is John Cena. I'm a WWE Superstar and I fight."
- Cena's line, "Hey, Plan B. Why don't you kiss my Plan A. The grown-ups are talking," was kind of funny.
- I marked out when Triple H did an impression of Teddy Long. They even used Long's music as he was leaving. I couldn't be happier.
Two Birds with One Stone
2 of 7Cesaro used a very slow pace against Dolph Ziggler in the first few minutes. He kept the fight on the ground and tried to wear his opponent down.
It took Ziggler until after a commercial break to really start getting in some offense. The pace really picked up as the IC champion started to gain momentum.
It was kind of surprising to see Cesaro take a clean loss this close to his title match with Sheamus, even it if was just a roll up.
Cesaro attacked Ziggler, but Sheamus made the save and kicked Cesaro's head to end the segment. It was a good match, but it could have been better.
We've seen these two have some great fights before, but this felt kind of average.
Grade: B-
Some notes from the match:
- I don't think Sheamus knows what the word "swinger" means in the United States.
- It was funny to hear Michael Cole call out JBL on being wrong about something and JBL actually admit it. It made for a humorous situation for a few seconds.
- Ziggler is tailor-made to face someone like Cesaro. Only he could make the Very European Uppercut look that good.
Why Uso Serious?
3 of 7Jey Uso was using a crutch to sell the injury he suffered at the hands of Stardust, but he did end up getting involved when Titus O'Neil tried to help his partner.
This is the kind of match that really highlights what it is that WWE sees in Heath Slater. He works great at a quick pace and sold for his opponent really well.
Jimmy Uso ended up getting the win with a big superkick and a Superfly Splash. It wasn't very long, but Uso and Slater did a good job with what they had to work with.
Grade: C+
Some notes from the match:
- Do people really cook rabbits on Easter?
- JBL talking about Isaac Asimov may be his most random reference yet.
- Slater sold that superkick like a champ. We're talking Dolph Ziggler-level selling.
Diva Drama
4 of 7Either WWE did some editing or Brie was really over with the crowd. She got a good pop when she came out for the match.
Paige started off talking trash, which only pissed off Brie more than she already was. They ended up getting pretty physical with each other as the fight went down to the mat.
AJ and Nikki were on commentary, and they ended up getting into a fight at ringside. For some reason, Brie ended up saving her sister.
Once Brie got back in the ring, Paige immediately hit Rampaige for the pin and the win. While the match itself was nothing special, the story told with all four women helped push the upcoming Diva's title match at Night of Champions really well.
Grade: C+
Some notes from the match:
- Brie finally debuted some new music.
- Brie looked really good in the ring. Watching her improve over the past 12 months has been an interesting ride.
- AJ equated the drama with the Bella sisters to arguing with her Chihuahua. Why is it not surprising that the smallest woman on the roster owns the smallest dog possible?
Bolieve That Zack Ryder Will Never Be Pushed Again
5 of 7Zack Ryder started off strong with a running dropkick, but it took Bo Dallas all of two seconds to reverse the momentum in his favor.
After about a minute, Dallas hit the Running Bo-Dog for the pin and the win. He addressed Jack Swagger after the match and said that everyone, including Swagger, could turn their lives around if they Bolieve.
Before he could finish, Swagger and Zeb Colter came out and Swagger rushed the ring to attack Dallas. They brawled until Swagger kicked Dallas out of the ring.
The match sucked, but at least the fight afterwards was entertaining.
Grade: D+
Some notes from the match:
- The booking of Zack Ryder is such a joke. This kid has talent, but WWE keeps pushing him further down.
- If Bo Dallas goes over Jack Swagger, there might be rioting in the streets.
Everyone vs. Everyone Else
6 of 7WWE gave this match a lot of time at the end of the show. Big Show and Mark Henry spent the majority of the match in the ring for the babyfaces, which was a bit surprising.
You would think Jericho, Reigns and Cena would be the ones carrying the weight, since they are the ones with the big feuds going on right now.
However, you should never count Big Show and Henry out. These are two big guys who have proven that they have more endurance than anyone would expect.
Usually a match with this many people would be a disaster, but the fact they had so much time to work with allowed everyone to shine a little bit.
Other than one noticeable timing mistake, this was very entertaining, with Cena playing the cheerleader throughout the match until he was finally tagged in at the end.
All hell broke loose when everyone came in and started attacking their opponents, eventually leading to the ref calling for the bell.
The good guys stood tall at the end of the night after everyone hit their finisher on the person they have been feuding with the most in recent weeks.
Grade: A
Some notes from the match:
- This should be made clear: the grade here is for entertainment value. There was nothing spectacular that happened in terms of spots, but the whole presentation worked.
- Bray Wyatt's reaction to being tagged in to face Big Show was perfect. Only that guy would smile when he had to face a giant.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
7 of 7Due to the fact that the final bout was given so much time, there really weren't many matches on the show. Normally that would be a bad thing, but it seemed to work this week.
They say less is more, and this is one of the times when that phrase applies. It felt like each segment had the right amount of time to tell the story it needed to tell, which is rare for any WWE show.
The 10-man tag match was much better than expected due to everyone being able to have the spotlight for a little bit.
It's really hard to complain when a show effectively addresses several different feuds while not feeling bloated with too much filler. It's just too bad that Zack Ryder can't catch a break.
The one segment that didn't get its own slide that needs to be complimented was the promo from Stardust and Goldust. Even as heels, it's so hard to hate these guys when they're this entertaining.
Predictions:
- Brie will cost Nikki the Divas Championship at NoC.
- Big Show will turn on Mark Henry after some kind of disagreement, possibly costing Henry his match against Rusev at NoC.
- Brock Lesnar's next appearance will see him destroy someone other than Cena.
- Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins at NoC will be made official on the next Raw.
- Same goes for Jack Swagger vs. Bo Dallas, but they'll be on the pre-show.
