England vs. India, 5th ODI: Highlights, Scorecard and Report from Headingley

Lee WalkerSep 5, 2014

England picked up a consolation victory with a 41-run triumph over India in the fifth and final one-day international at Headingley.

After being put in to bat in Leeds, the hosts scored 294-7 with Yorkshire batsman Joe Root scoring a century on his home ground.

India, who had won three consecutive matches after the opening game was washed out, could only make 253 in their reply.

Root scored his second ODI century from 105 balls and was eventually out for 113 in the 46th over after hitting 10 boundaries and three sixes.

He was Mohammed Shami’s second wicket but the damage had been done by that point, as he shared a 52-run partnership with under-pressure captain Alastair Cook (46) and 108 with Jos Buttler (49).

The hosts lost Alex Hales (four) and Moeen Ali (nine) in the opening powerplay before Cook departed after 20 overs following his highest score in a disappointing series.

Eoin Morgan (14) was stumped by MS Dhoni off Ravi Ashwin but Buttler scored his runs off just 40 balls before a cameo from Ben Stokes, with 33 off 23 balls, boosted the hosts’ total.

India’s reply started badly as midweek centurion Ajinkya Rahane sliced Jimmy Anderson to Morgan at point off the third ball.

He went for a duck, and Anderson then had Virat Kohli caught at slip by Cook in the powerplay.

Shikhar Dhawan (31) and Suresh Raina (18) couldn’t convert their starts as they afterward fell victim to Ali.

When Ambati Rayudu was caught at mid-on off Stokes, for 53 in the 31st over, India were in real trouble at 132-5.

After Dhoni (29) hit Steven Finn straight to Stokes at cover, the tourists were left needing 108 runs from the final 10 overs. Despite some big hitting from Ravi Jadeja, who made 87, they fell well short.
