Divine Intervention: Mets Get Help From Angels

Michael GanciJul 11, 2009

To be quite honest, I am sick and tired of all the negativity around this team. I just spent a week-plus with one of the most negative Mets’ fans there is, and I like to take the positives out of things. This morning, I was still wondering why Argenis Reyes was going to stay over Nick Evans, and I decided to close my eyes and pray.

Sure enough, my prayers were answered.

Two Angels recently joined the Mets. One was Angel Pagan, who has been out due to injury for quite some time, and the other is Angel (soft g) Berroa, who was signed as a free agent after the Yankees let him go just a short time ago.

As I stated earlier, the presence of Argenis Reyes makes no sense on the current roster, although he will keep his spot until Berroa dusts the cobwebs off. Berroa is hitting .136 so far this season with the Yankees, and that is twice as good as Reyes!

All joking aside, he is capable of more, and remember, he was once an untouchable prospect that won the Rookie of the Year award with the Kansas City Royals. That doesn’t happen by accident.

Overall, Berroa is a .259 career hitter with 46 career homers. He can play second, third and short, and he will be much better as the 25th man as Argenis Reyes is right now.

I know…that is not saying much.

The other guy who rejoined the Mets becomes much more important as the result of the Jeff Francoeur trade. With Ryan Church being traded, that left Jeremy Reed as the only healthy option at center field. While Reed isn’t useless, Pagan will help lessen the load until Carlos Beltran returns to take his place in center.

Pagan is currently batting at a .304 clip this season, although that has only been in 46 at-bats of limited action. What opened Mets’ fans eyes was last season, which is when Pagan hit .275 in 91 at-bats before getting hurt trying to catch a fly ball. He was playing an excellent outfield, and he was a new fan favorite.

Unfortunately, his problems usually revolve around staying healthy.

The talent is certainly there with these two guys, but whether it is injury or inconsistency, something needs to click for them to make a lasting impression with the Mets.

We sure could use their help right about now.
