WWE SummerSlam 2014: Biggest Questions Ahead of Major Show

Sharon GlencrossAug 14, 2014

Heading into WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, there are several major questions for fans and critics to consider.

In fact, the Los Angeles event should serve as a platform to wrap up many long-running storylines and feuds—as well as give us an indication on the career status of several wrestlers on the roster.

One question that springs to mind: Is WWE willing to go all the way with Brock Lesnar and have him win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from John Cena in the main event?

There are potential problems with a Lesnar reign. His light schedule, mainly. Ideally, you want your champion to be able to appear on every Raw, do house shows and be available for various promotional interviews outside of the ring.

This is partly why Cena is so reliable in his current role. The company really is his life—something he’s been eager to point out in promos on Raw recently when discussing the key differences between him and Lesnar.

Can WWE overlook Lesnar’s part-time status and give him a run with the belt? I would guess the bookers will have to put aside concerns about his schedule and have him go over on Sunday.

They did sacrifice The Undertaker’s legendary streak back in April to establish the former MMA fighter as a monster, after all. That was a massive deal.

Frankly, the writers have got too much invested in him to suddenly drop his push. Lesnar winning the belt seems like the only proper option right now.

The status of Paige is also a big question. Will she regain the Divas Championship from AJ Lee at the event?

The British star’s first run with the title was pretty awful—she was stuck with a bland babyface character and often made to look weak and inept. How any times did Alicia Fox beat her up on television? I honestly lost count.

But a heel turn has turned things around for her in a big way—she’s now one of the most entertaining acts on the roster. Do people in management recognize what they have in the young star? Will she go over on Sunday?

Let’s hope so. It’s time the company got behind a new female wrestler.

Speaking of Divas: Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella are due to clash in what has, shockingly, been one of the most hyped and promoted matches on the show. Seriously, only Lesnar vs. Cena has been treated as a bigger deal by the company.

Will the women justify that attention and churn out a good match? Eh, that one is up in the air.

Bella's an OK wrestler—by Divas Division standards—but she’s not really experienced enough to carry a non-worker like McMahon.

Of course, McMahon does tend to make the effort when she gets into the ring. (She’s probably better than the likes of Rosa Mendes or Eva Marie, at least.)

And who can forget her wickedly entertaining bout with Trish Stratus at 2001’s No Way Out pay-per-view?

Provided WWE keeps it short—and books the bout to have its fair share of weapons and outside interference so people aren’t too focused on the in-ring exchanges—it might be able to produce something decent and entertaining here. Maybe.

SummerSlam looks like it will be a fascinating pay-per-view when you consider all these things.

Will Lesnar reach the top of the mountain? Is Paige set to win the Divas Championship and become a major female star? Will McMahon and Bella shock everyone and have a strong match? We'll have to wait and see.
