Brock Lesnar Must Walk Out of SummerSlam with John Cena's WWE World Title
When Brock Lesnar squares off against John Cena in the main event of Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, the former WWE and UFC heavyweight champion must walk out of the event holding Cena’s world title.
It’s what’s best for business.
Lesnar is carrying the most momentum of his wrestling career right now. While Monday’s episode of Raw featuring Lesnar going face to face with Hulk Hogan was an exciting way to build to Sunday’s match, the main storyline leading into this PPV has been based upon Lesnar’s victory over The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30.

Few fans actually believed Lesnar had a chance to end the undefeated streak, but he stunned the world and conquered The Deadman.
After conquering the streak, there wasn’t much left for Lesnar to do, so he walked away from the WWE again. When Cena won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank, though, it became clear that Lesnar had another feat to accomplish.
Triple H may be using Lesnar as his Option C in order to take the title away from Cena at SummerSlam, but The Beast Incarnate was going to return eventually on his own and claim the prize he feels rightfully belongs to him.
Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman has also been outspoken about his perception of the match, and in an interview with Ring Rust Radio, Heyman spoke directly to Cena fans about Lesnar’s history and his prediction for what will happen Sunday, courtesy of News of Delaware County's Joe Arcidiacono:
"I think the people who need to be sold on this pay-per-view are John Cena fans, to which I offer this very quick sales pitch. If you are a fan of John Cena, and if you are there is no accounting for taste, this is your last opportunity to see him. And if you think it's all hype and hyperbole, here's something to consider; if you look back on 21 appearances at WrestleMania by The Undertaker, you can rarely find a video clip of someone even getting a two-count on The Undertaker.
Brock Lesnar just didn't beat The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar hospitalized The Undertaker. Brock Lesnar gave The Undertaker such an ass-kicking that The Undertaker has not been seen, nor heard from since. There was no controversy. There was no outside interference. There was no manager distraction. Brock Lesnar stepped into the ring and beat The Undertaker within an inch of his life, and the same fate awaits for John Cena at the Staples Center, on August 17 in Los Angeles at SummerSlam.
"
For the WWE, Lesnar’s return is exactly what the company needed heading into the second biggest show of the year. With the WWE Network subscriber numbers lower than many anticipated, according to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline (subscription required), the WWE is desperate to convince the casual fans to buy a subscription.
Lesnar is a star athlete who became a mainstream attraction during his time dominating the UFC. According to MMA Manifesto, Lesnar helped the UFC draw over a million buys for its PPVs on four separate occasions during his time with the company. That’s more than any other fighter in the history of MMA.
With the WWE booking Cena vs. Lesnar for the title, the company is hoping to draw many of the fans who haven’t bought a PPV in years to spend the small amount and sign up for the network. Many fans look down on wrestling because it’s scripted, but Lesnar is not perceived in that light.
Lesnar is unquestionably one of the toughest men on the planet and a legitimate fighter. The hope from the WWE is that casual fans who don’t order often, or even MMA fans who have never ordered before, will make the investment to watch Lesnar in the ring again.
This isn’t just about Lesnar winning the title, though. Sunday’s PPV is Cena’s chance to walk away and freshen up his character.
There is no questioning the hustle, loyalty and respect of Cena when it comes to the WWE, but many fans are tired of his same old song and dance. Monday’s heartfelt promo was a step in the right direction, but Cena needs an edge to prove to the WWE Universe that he is not the same stale character he’s been for the last decade.
At 37 years old and still the most valuable asset to the WWE, the company would be smart to use the beating Lesnar will put on Cena at SummerSlam as a way to get him off television. It doesn’t have to be for a long time, but Cena deserves an extended break. With Lesnar drawing crowds and carrying the company for the short term, Cena would be able to rest and relax in order to come back stronger than ever.
It may be too much to ask for Cena’s overall attitude to change because he is still making serious money for the company, but a month or two on the shelf would give the WWE Universe a chance to miss him and appreciate him when he returns.
A Cena victory on Sunday would kill all of the momentum Lesnar created with his win over Undertaker, but it would also create a backlash amongst fans who understand that Lesnar deserves the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
WWE has done everything correctly in this storyline thus far. Allowing Lesnar to get his revenge now for the loss at Extreme Rules in 2012 and continue building momentum moving forward will help rebuild the credibility Lesnar lost during his poor booking against Triple H and others before.
Lesnar must walk out of SummerSlam as the new WWE World Heavyweight champion.
