This Florida Marlins Comeback Is One To Enjoy

Leslie MonteiroJul 10, 2009

Thursday night had a making of an ugly night at Chase Field for the Marlins. The Marlins did not get off to a great start, thanks to an ineffective start by Andrew Miller, and then they lost Burke Badenhop in the game after the ball was hit at his knee on a Gerardo Parra's line drive.

The Diamondbacks took a 7-0 lead after the fifth inning, and it looked like this was going to be a lost cause knowing the Marlins' offense has struggled without Hanley Ramirez, who has not played in a few days.

Marlins fans may be looking at their newspaper today, and realize their team pulled off a stunner by coming back and defeating the Diamondbacks, 14-7. Naturally, they want to know how this unfolded especially with the game being late at night.

After the fifth inning, the Fish started the comeback process by mustering up some hits and runs in an attempt to plug away in cutting their deficit.

It started with a two-run home run by Jorge Cantu, and a solo shot by Jeremy Hermida in the sixth inning to cut the Marlins' deficit to 7-3. When those two hit their home runs at the time, it was nothing more than the Marlins trying to look respectable.

Instead, the Marlins were planting a seed on the Diamondbacks that this game was far from over, and it continued in the seventh inning when the Marlins loaded up the bases with no outs, and Dan Uggla was facing Esmerling Vasquez.

Uggla could have tied the game with one swing of the bat, but instead, he settled for a RBI single that scored Andy Gonzalez. Cody Ross grounded into a double play to end the Marlins' threat in that inning.

As frustrating as that inning was, everything was going the Marlins' way. The Diamondbacks relievers have been struggling at times this season so the Marlins hitters liked their chances of tying this up.

The Marlins made good of their belief by having an inning to remember in the eighth inning. They scored 10 runs in that inning to give them a 14-7 lead against Arizona.

It began with a walk and a double to start the Marlins' eighth inning, and Fredi Gonzalez pulled a shocker by having Ramirez pinch-hit for Wes Helms. The thought was Ramirez was going to play either Saturday or Sunday, but here he is with an opportunity to tie the game.

There is nothing better than a manager stunning the other team by having his best hitter pinch-hit when he is not starting, which gives the other team's pitcher and manager something to think about. It's a great spot to have Ramirez in.

Like a great hitter, Ramirez hits a single to load up the bases. The Diamondbacks were fortunate that he did not hit far enough to get a runner to score, but they could only breathe a sigh of relief for a short time.

Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch was hoping for the best when he inserted Scott Schoeneweis to relieve Gutierrez. That was probably not the right move to make since the Marlins have hit Schoeneweis well.

Schoeneweis got Ross Gload to ground out, but the Marlins made it a 7-5 game. Brett Carroll was making a pinch-hit appearance, and Carroll did what he does best, which is doing well as a pinch-hitter.

Carroll's three-run home run gave the Marlins an 8-7 lead, and then the Marlins created a domino effect of hits off Schoeneweis, and from there, the Diamondbacks unraveled.

Say this about the Marlins. They never give up even when they are behind, and there is a reason why they have came back 21 times in their victories this season.

They keep coming at the other team by mustering up some hits, and then get some runs out of it in the middle innings, and then they get on a groove of having that one big inning, which they would score like last night.

The Marlins relievers have been scrutinized often for their ineffectiveness, but the Marlins would not be in that position to have that great eighth inning without their work last night.

Badenhop, Brian Sanches and Kiko Calero did a good job of throwing six-and-one-third scoreless innings.

In the last few weeks, the Marlins relievers have been pitching well, and last night was a good example of that. With Leo Nunez and Calero back, the bullpen is ready to take charge again.

This comeback had its meaning for sure not just for the victory, but with them hanging in there in the NL East  with the Phillies starting to win again, and  having a two-game winning streak instead of them losing three of four.

When the season is over, a certain game stands out for a team to remember.

This was one of those games.
