Best Ballparks to Get Drunk @
Collin CooperJul 6, 2009
Like getting tanked at the game? Is your idea of having fun getting drunk with your buddies and not caring what goes on in the field? We ranked all the ballparks for you to aid you in your quest.
We rated each Major League ballpark in five categories: percent of people in the city who drink (no one likes to drink alone); ballpark consumable liquid offering (beer); friendliness of the people (everybody loves new drinking buddies); and post game options / public transportation (The CHG hates Drunk Drivers).
Here are the best major league ballparks to get bombed…
World Class Drinking Palaces
- #1 Chicago Cubs- 4 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 5 (Post Game) ; 5 (Transportation) = 4.2 (Score)- Are you really surprised about this? Wrigley Field is pretty much one big bar. The Cubbies get high marks for post game bar-hopping as it’s the best in the business and the El can get you home safely when you are done.
- #2 Seattle – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 5 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 4.0 (Score) – Some of the best beer options in all of the majors, Safeco is a great place to mingle with the locals. Add to that the bars of nearby Pioneer Square. There is a light rail line opening soon connecting the ballpark to downtown and the airport.
- #3 Baltimore – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 5 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 4.0 (Score) – Baltimore is a hang-outside-and-drink-some-beers kind of town. The Baltimore inner harbor is walking distance chock-full of bars and hotels. If you really do need to travel, there is nearby light and heavy rail.
- #4 Pittsburgh – 4 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 4.0 (Score) – Pittsburgh is the quintessential shot-and-a-beer town and PNC Park is the perfect place to start off your night. The area around the park has transformed into a hotspot and the T (light rail) is arriving on the North Shore soon- for now use the Gateway Clipper.
- #5 Colorado – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 5 (People) ; 5 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 4.0 (Score) – Coors Field is a fantastic boozing facility. Did you know they perfected Blue Moon here? The people of Denver are as nice as they get and LoDo has become one of the best party spots in the rockies. Coors Field needs to get some transit options.
Stumble Home Goodness
- #6 Cleveland – 4 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 3.8(Score) - There are a lot of reasons to go to Progressive Field- one of the best being getting your drink on. The area around the stadium is fine but not special. Cleveland does offer some transit options.
- #7 Minnesota – 5 (# of Drinkers) ; 2 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 3.6(Score) – Its the last season in the Metrodome, and Target Field will take over next season and will do better on this list. Minneapolis is a surprisingly lush city when it comes to booze.
- #8 Boston – 5 (# of Drinkers) ; 2 (Ballpark Drinks ; 2 (People) ; 5 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.6(Score)- Boston is a great place to raise a pint at one of the local Fenway bars. Beers at Fenway are boring and are not cheap (no happy hours allowed in Mass) and the people are notoriously not friendly. The T is used to dealing with drunks.
- #9 Toronto – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.6 (Sc0re) – Canadian beer is like moonshine right? The Rodgers Centre is a great place to pound ‘em and Toronto is the only major league city where 19 year-olds get to join in the festivities.
- #10 San Francisco – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 5 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.6 (Score) – The city by the bay loves it’s anchor steam beer. Fans here are friendly, post game options a pretty decent and the transit options range from light rail, commuter trains and boats= nice.
- #11 Oakland – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 1 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.4 (Score)- Oakland got one thing right… When your stadium totally sucks at least you can provide people with beer… and a good means for transportation home. It’s the second best dive bar in the majors.
- #12 Arizona – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 3.4 (Score) – The people here are some of the friendliest in the majors. Phoenix isn’t really a boozing kind of town, but the downtown scene isn’t bad, especially if you are young.
- #13 St Louis – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 3.4 (Score)- Allegedly getting a Busch beer at Busch stadium is a task. St. Louis people are nice folks, but they’d rather watch the game than put up with your drunkeness. The new village at the ballpark development will surely improve their ranking.
- #14 Milwaukee – 5 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 3.4 (Score) – They are the Brewers for crying out loud. It’s a great place to get bombed during the game, just don’t expect to find anything close by after the game… and bring a DD as there are few transit options.
- #15 Chicago White Sox – 4 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 3 (People) ; 1 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.4 (Score)- Chicago already owns the best ballpark in the country for drinking. It’s sister team is not a bad place either- it’s just in a part of town that you want nothing to do with… trust us.
- #16 Philadelphia – 4 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 2 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 4 (Transportation) = 3.2 (Score) – It’s big bad Philadelphia. Don’t expect to make too many friends here, more like expect to get a beat down if you get too drunk. The ballpark is in a sports complex surrounded by parking lots, you can at least ride the Broad St line back into the city after the game.
- #17 New York Yankees – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 2 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 5 (Transportation) = 3.2 (Score) – The New Yankee stadium has been killing fans with bland and expensive beers. There are a few classic bars nearby to mingle with (nicer than you’d think) New Yorkers. The Subway is right there running 24 hours a day.
- #18 Washington – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 2 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 5 (Transportation) = 3.2 (Score)- They plopped this bad boy in the middle of vastness hoping the area around it would grow up. For now, there is nothing going on.
- #19 NY Mets – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 3 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 5 (Transportation) = 3.2 (Score) – Beer selection here is better than that of the stadium crosstown. The post game options include bar hopping at LaGuardia Airport… At least the train ride home is perfect for those who like to tie one on.
- #20 San Diego – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 4 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 3.2 (Score)- San Diego is home to some world-class brews. The home of the Padres is pretty laid back like the people of the finest city. Take the Red Trolley home.
Good for One or Two
- #21 Los Angeles Dodgers – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 3 (Transportation) = 2.8 (Score)- Good luck finding something to do after the game besides sitting in traffic. Everyone drives in LA although the gold line is nearby.
- #22 Cincinnati – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 3 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 2.8 (Score)- It’s a nice ballpark, but a drinking utopia it’s not. No transit options here. At least the downtown is close.
- #23 Houston – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 2 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 2.6 (Score) – Minute Maid Park is a nice ballpark but in a part of Downtown Houston that is desolate at night. Make sure you have a number for a cab.
- #24 Detroit – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 3 (People) ; 3 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 2.6 (Score) – It’s in Downtown Detroit… do we need to elaborate? It is a nice ballpark, but you’d think this city would be home to more boozers. There are casino’s close by. Everyone here drives as if their livelihood depended upon it.
- #25 Kansas City – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 1 (Post Game) ; 1 (Transportation) = 2.6 (Score)- It’s in the middle of parking lots. A beer garden this ain’t.
- #26 Texas – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 4 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 1 (Transportation) = 2.6 (Score) – Generalizing… Everyone in Dallas drives and drinks lawn mower beer.
- #27 Anaheim – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 5 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 3 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 1 (Transportation) = 2.6 (Score)- The Angels offer good beer at good prices. You can almost bank on sobering up in the parking lot waiting to leave.
- #28 Tampa Bay – 3 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 1 (Transportation) = 2.4 (Score) – The Trop might be the laughing stock of the majors. It does offer some good beers, but you only have one bar option after the game.
- #29 Atlanta – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 2 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 4 (People) ; 1 (Post Game) ; 2 (Transportation) = 2.2 (Score) – Bad beer selection. Southern people tend to be talkative towards strangers. Perhaps the best family atmosphere in MLB… not what we are looking for. Have fun riding the tram back to civilization.
- #30 Miami – 2 (# of Drinkers) ; 3 (Ballpark Drinks) ; 1 (People) ; 2 (Post Game) ; 1 (Transportation) = 4.0 (Score) 2;3;1;2;1 = 1.8 – If you are in Miami, there is no reason to leave the beach. Everything you could possibly want is there and not at Landshark Stadium.
