NBA Draft: Dave Metrick Declares His Eligibility

Dave MetrickMay 4, 2008

Itโ€™s with great excitement that I, Dave Metrick, publicly declare my intention to make myself eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft.

It was a difficult, gut-wrenching decision.ย  But after many intense conversations with my family and my God, Iโ€™ve decided that itโ€™s time for me to take my game to the next level: the National Basketball Association.ย

Playing in the NBA has always been a dream of mine.ย  A dream I always assumed could never come to fruition.ย  See, at 34 years of age, Iโ€™m no longer what you would call young and my five-foot-ten, 190-pound frame isnโ€™t exactly NBA ready.ย  Iโ€™m also woefully slow and have no โ€œhopsโ€ whatsoever.ย  โ€œUpsideโ€ is definitely not a word Hubie Brown would use to describe me.ย

But fear not.ย  Once drafted, Iโ€™ll be hiring a personal trainer and introducing myself to several local HGH dealers.ย

For NBA general managers out there who might consider taking a second round flyer on me, hereโ€™s what Dave Metrick brings to the table.ย

-Iโ€™m fiercely competitive.ย  But in a good way.ย

-Iโ€™m a pretty good jump shooter (when left wide open) and would undoubtedly have a higher free throw percentage than Shaq.ย

-What I lack in lateral quickness I make up for in personality.ย

-Iโ€™m very mature and could instantly become a team leader and/or designated driver.ย

-Iโ€™m basically like a much shorter, much slower Mark Madsen.

Preposterous, you say?ย  Perhaps.ย  But is having a short, slow white guy play in the Association really any stupider than having the All-Star game in Las Vegas, moving a franchise from Seattle to Oklahoma City, or letting Isiah Thomas run the Knicks?ย  I didnโ€™t think so.ย ย

The reality is I donโ€™t have what it takes top play in the NBA.ย  But why let that fact get in the way of my hoop dreams?ย  Reality certainly isnโ€™t preventing this yearโ€™s avalanche of under-qualified underclassmen from going pro.

There are plenty of college players who are ready to make the jump.ย  But there arenโ€™t fifty of them.ย  Thatโ€™s right, this year there are nearly fifty early entries into Juneโ€™s NBA draft, but only sixty selections.ย  And when you take into consideration seniors and foreign-born players, there just arenโ€™t enough selections to accommodate everyone.ย

So why are all of these kids taking a chance that might wind up biting them in the backside?ย  Because theyโ€™ve been blinded by the dream of playing NBA basketball โ€“ the money, the fame, the women, the tattoosโ€ฆ the women with tattoos.ย  Itโ€™s just too much to turn down.ย ย ย

I know thereโ€™s a good chance I wonโ€™t get drafted into the NBA come June.ย  Iโ€™ll probably spend the entire draft sitting on my couch waiting for a phone call that never comes.ย  But sadly I wonโ€™t be alone.ย  Many of the early entries will be right there with me.ย  And when their phone call doesnโ€™t come, theyโ€™ll realize theyโ€™ve made a horrible mistake, and suddenly their NBA dream will seem as unattainable as mine.ย

Well, maybe not that unattainable.
