Time For Cubs To Trade Fox and Wells

Cory StephensJul 6, 2009

That is right. It is time to trade both Fox and Wells. Two of the best players on the Cubs' team this year. This may sound crazy at first, but it is something the Cubs need to do.

Fox and Wells have shown they are major-league caliber players. Wells has been great, posting a 3-3 record with a 2.43 ERA in 10 games. His record should be a lot better.

Fox has been the spark the Cubs needed when Aramis Ramirez was on the DL. In 71 at bats, he is hitting a .310 with four home runs and 15 RBI.

So why trade the two bright spots of the season?

The best reason is the value of Fox and Wells will never be higher then it is right now. It is very unlikely that Jake Fox or Randy Wells will continue to play at the level they are playing at now.

Case in point, Randy Wells would have the third lowest ERA in the National League if he had pitched enough innings. Randy Wells is a good pitcher, but he is over-performing and is beating hitters that have never seen him before. As teams see him for a second and third time, his numbers are going to sky rocket from their current levels.

Jake Fox has stepped in and produced when the Cubs needed him the most. He has shown he can be a valuable player on any team who can provide pop at the plate. The problem is he does not have a position. With Ramirez returning, he will see very limited playing time. I believe Jake Fox is a right-handed Micah Hoffpauir. The guy does not have a position on the team.

The Cubs need to trade these guys while their numbers are high and they can possibly get some value back in return. The Cubs desperately need bullpen help including a good lefty reliever. Marshall has been a serviceable No. 5 pitcher and there are not many other players the Cubs would actually be able to move.
