Losing Gordon Is a Gain For The Bulls
Once again the Bulls didn't make a solid effort in securing Ben Gordon's future. At the end, BG7 will be signing with Detroit once free agent signing opens up on July 8th. Even though Ben Gordon is a great scorer, the Bulls might actually gain from this.
By letting BG7 go, the Bulls will free up the back court for Derrick Rose to operate. During the end of last season, the Bulls got a very deep back court after trading for Brad Miller and John Salmon. Perhaps a bit too deep and talented that it would be hard to find playing time to satisfy all of them for the next. Now with Gordon gone, the back court rotation will run a lot smoother between Rose, Salmon, and Hinrich coming off the bench playing either 1 or 2.
Besides the smoother rotation, expect the Bulls to increase their defense efficiency at the back court. While Gordon is known to be a great scorer, he's not known to be a great defender. This is where Hinrich and Salmon has the advantage. Though Hinrich is not a great scorer, he's able to put up 15pts and defends a lot better than Gordon. And the same goes for Salmon as well.
Also expect the Bulls to be a big player in the free agency market after the 2009-2010 season. By not signing Gordon and additional expiring contracts, the Bulls will have plenty of cap room to shop around for players.
This time it's different from the early post Jordan era. Back then the Bulls had the cap space, but the worst team anyone could've imagined, with Toni Kukoc being the best player. All they could sign was Ron Mercer instead of Tim Duncan. This time the Bulls will have a talented team, with rising star Derrick Rose and young talents such as Joahkim Noah and Tyrus Thomas to lure top talents. I am not saying they'll have a huge chance in getting LeBron or Wade, but I am sure they could get someone good such as Joe Johnson or Boozer.
So for all of you die hard Bulls fans out there...There's no need to be sad that Ben Gordon won't be coming back next year. It's a gain for the Bulls in the present and the future.
